Description
What kind of wine it is
Urban Lagrein Riserva from Cantina Tramin is a still red wine that embodies the winemaking vocation of South Tyrol. Made from Lagrein grapes, it appears in the glass with an impenetrable ruby colour and violet highlights. On the palate, it offers a velvety texture and an enveloping structure, supported by vibrant, well-integrated tannins. The flavour profile finishes with a long aftertaste, characterised by notes of wild berries and dark chocolate, for a deep sip with remarkable ageing potential.
Where it comes from
The vineyards thrive in the mountainous areas of South Tyrol, at an altitude between 230 and 300 metres. West and south-west exposures favour optimal ripening of the grapes, supported by an ideal Alpine microclimate. The environment is marked by significant temperature variations: the daytime warmth, tempered by Mediterranean breezes, alternates with the cool nights brought by high-altitude winds, enhancing the aromatic purity of the bunches. Soils rich in calcareous gravel, sand, clay and porphyry give the wine a compact texture and a distinctive mineral identity.
How it is produced
The cellar process begins with manual harvesting to preserve the integrity of the bunches. After destemming, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in wooden vats, where malolactic fermentation also occurs. Ageing is fundamental to the wine’s complexity: twelve months in barriques, followed by a period in large oak casks, smooth the varietal’s rough edges. After bottling, adequate rest allows the rich aromatic bouquet to harmonise, with prominent notes of violet, blackberry, plum and graphite, enriched by fresh touches of eucalyptus.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1898, Cantina Tramin entrusted oenologist Willi Stürz with the creation of the Urban Lagrein Riserva 2022 Alto Adige DOC. It is made from grapes hand-picked in October, with 12 months in barrique and further ageing in the bottle. This velvety red wine boasts an extraordinary longevity of 10-15 years. Its notes of dark chocolate and wild berries make it ideal for game and mature cheeses.
