Description

What kind of wine it is

Maglen Pinot Nero Riserva by Tramin is a still red wine that elegantly embodies the character of the Alto Adige region. Made from Pinot Noir grapes, it appears in the glass with a ruby red colour enriched by delicate garnet hues. On the nose, clear notes of cherry and morello cherry emerge, accompanied by wild berries and light spicy hints. On the palate, it stands out for its elegant structure and harmonious sip, supported by a well-integrated tannic texture and a clear persistence that invites another taste. Its measured evolution over time promises even greater finesse.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the renowned micro-zones of Glen and Mazzon, located in the area of Termeno, in Alto Adige. The vineyards, situated between 400 and 600 metres above sea level, benefit from an ideal exposure that ensures a slow and balanced ripening of the bunches. The soils, characterised by sandy clay, give the wine its typical gustatory texture. The climate of the area is marked by strong temperature variations, where the warmth of Mediterranean breezes meets the freshness of the nocturnal mountain winds, a decisive factor for the development of the fruit's aromatic breadth.

How it is produced

Harvesting is carried out by hand by mid-October to preserve the integrity of the bunches. In the cellar, temperature-controlled fermentation takes place in large vats using the cap submersion technique, favouring optimal extraction of colour and structural components. Ageing continues for eleven months in small oak barrels, followed by a further period in larger barrels to refine the tannins and harmonise the sip. A final rest of at least six months completes the process, making this red the ideal pairing for game and roast dishes.

History and Curiosities

The Maglen Pinot Nero Riserva embodies the excellence of the micro-areas of Glen and Mazzon, bearing witness to the dedication of Cantina Tramin, a historic cooperative founded in 1898. Under the guidance of oenologist Willi Stürz, this South Tyrolean establishment enhances grapes that are strictly hand-picked to preserve their integrity. The elegance of the 2022 vintage, expertly matured in wood, has been celebrated with prestigious international awards, including an outstanding score of 94/100 awarded by James Suckling and praise from Wine Spectator.

In a time of hardship for Alto Adige’s wine producers, Christian Schrott, parish priest of Tramin and later Member of the Austrian Parliament, founded our cooperative in 1898 in order to protect the livelihood and future of the wine producers from this mountain area. Thanks to the strength of this union, Cantina Tramin has become one of Alto Adige’s most respected cooperatives and an example recognized all over the world.

Today, we are 160 families tending approximately 270 hectares of vineyards. We pride ourselves on the fact that each bottle is the quintessence of our philosophy of life and work: accuracy, commitment, trust and creativity.
