Description
What kind of wine it is
Terrazze dell’Etna Etna Rosso Cirneco is a still red wine that expresses the soul of Etna. Made from Nerello Mascalese grapes, it appears in the glass as an intense ruby red with violet highlights. The bouquet is broad, with notes of small fruits, vanilla and a typical volcanic hint. On the palate, it is warm and robust, with an excellent structural balance between acidity, tannic texture and smoothness. The dynamic finish elegantly accompanies red meats, pork, hare and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Bocca d’Orzo, in Randazzo, on the slopes of Etna. The vines are cultivated using the traditional Etnean bush vine system, with a density of eight thousand plants per hectare. The vineyard includes many old vines over sixty years old, rooted in volcanic soils. This habitat enjoys a cool and breezy climate, with strong temperature variations between day and night. The wine’s name pays homage to the Cirneco, a native Sicilian dog, symbolising the bond between strength and natural elegance.
How it is produced
Harvesting takes place at the end of October. Terrazze dell’Etna carries out long macerations to extract the best aromatic components. Afterwards, the wine matures for eighteen months in wooden barrels, an essential step to smooth the tannins. This is followed by a further eighteen months of bottle ageing, ensuring excellent longevity over time. To fully appreciate its qualities, a brief decanting is recommended and serving between eighteen and twenty degrees.
History and Curiosities
The Cirneco from Terrazze dell’Etna originates in Bocca d’Orzo from goblet-trained vines over sixty years old. Its name pays tribute to the native Sicilian hunting dog of the same name, whose elegance and untamed strength are reflected in the wine. Under the guidance of oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, the winemaking process is characterised by long, controlled macerations, followed by 18 months of ageing in wood and the same period in bottle. A majestic Etna DOC, which promises an extraordinary longevity estimated between ten and fifteen years.

Ancient head-trained vines over 60 years old give life to Cirneco: Etna Rosso, whose name is a tribute to the volcano's native hunting dog, which possesses the wine's equal characteristics in terms of elegance and strength.
The younger vines give birth to Carusu, a young Etna Doc that retraces the history of Etna reds in a modern key, Rosato Etna Doc with its pinky hues, and Ciuri, an elegant and unique wine, originated from the white vinification of Nerello Mascalese.
From the Carricante vineyards comes Cinniri, a Bianco Etna DOC that, as the name indicates, brings the typical flavours of the volcano back into the glass.
The international grape varieties give rise to four Metodo Classico sparkling wines (two that remain 36 months on the lees and two that remain 50 months) and two IGT Sicilia red wines. Read more
