Description
What kind of wine it is
Cratere by Terrazze dell’Etna is a still red wine produced in the heart of the Terre Siciliane region. This blend combines Nerello Mascalese and Petit Verdot grapes, offering an intense ruby colour with elegant violet highlights. On the nose, it opens with aromas of ripe fruit and balsamic notes, enriched by a distinctive volcanic note. On the palate, it is savoury and dynamic, with a consistent structure that extends the finish. Thanks to its intensity, it enhances aged red meats, game and mature cheeses, giving its best when served between sixteen and eighteen degrees, preferably after an hour of decanting.
Where it comes from
The vines take root in the locality of Bocca d’Orzo, in the territory of Randazzo, Sicily. The vineyards are cultivated using the bush and espalier training systems on deep lava flow soils, a fundamental geological matrix that gives the sip clear precision and tension. The climate of the area is cool and breezy, characterised by a significant temperature range between day and night. These particular environmental conditions create an ideal microclimate, essential for defining the aromatic expression and promoting the balanced development of the vines.
How it is produced
Harvesting takes place during the first ten days of October, when the bunches reach optimal ripeness. In the winery, the process involves a long and controlled maceration on the skins, a decisive step to gradually extract colour and polyphenolic matter. The wine is then aged for six months in barrels, softening its texture, before completing its journey with twelve months of rest in the bottle. This practice stabilises the structure and ensures the elegant continuity of the sip over time, enhancing the identity of the original fruit.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 2008, Terrazze dell’Etna pays tribute to the Sicilian terroir with Cratere 2020, a red wine born from the volcanic soils of Randazzo in a cool, breezy microclimate. The elegance of Nerello Mascalese (80%) is combined with the intensity of Petit Verdot through a long maceration at controlled temperature. Under the expert guidance of Riccardo Cotarella, the careful oak ageing for six months and the subsequent year in bottle give this Terre Siciliane IGT a savoury and dynamic profile, perfect for enhancing the most important occasions.

Ancient head-trained vines over 60 years old give life to Cirneco: Etna Rosso, whose name is a tribute to the volcano's native hunting dog, which possesses the wine's equal characteristics in terms of elegance and strength.
The younger vines give birth to Carusu, a young Etna Doc that retraces the history of Etna reds in a modern key, Rosato Etna Doc with its pinky hues, and Ciuri, an elegant and unique wine, originated from the white vinification of Nerello Mascalese.
From the Carricante vineyards comes Cinniri, a Bianco Etna DOC that, as the name indicates, brings the typical flavours of the volcano back into the glass.
The international grape varieties give rise to four Metodo Classico sparkling wines (two that remain 36 months on the lees and two that remain 50 months) and two IGT Sicilia red wines. Read more
