Description
What kind of wine it is
Solenida by Tenute Lunelli is an organic red that embodies the essence of the Costa Toscana. Made from Sangiovese grapes, it stands out for its deep ruby colour and an aromatic profile ranging from black cherry to plum, with notes of blackberry jam, liquorice and spices. On the palate, it reveals a solid structure and a vibrant tannic texture, ensuring extraordinary longevity. It is recommended to let it breathe for about an hour to fully appreciate its potential, making it the ideal companion for flavourful dishes based on game, pork and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The Sangiovese is grown on the hills of Tenuta Podernovo in Terricciola, in the heart of the Pisan hills. Here, the proximity to the sea creates a coastal microclimate favourable to the balanced ripening of the vines. The soils are characterised by silty sands, clays and a significant concentration of fossil remains; the very name of the wine pays homage to the Solenidae shells found in these soils. The agronomic management strictly adheres to the principles of organic farming, aiming to sustainably enhance the most suitable plots of the area.
How it is produced
Production begins with a meticulous manual selection of bunches from the estate's oldest vineyards. After a cold pre-maceration in steel, a maceration of about three weeks follows to encourage optimal extraction of colour and tannins. To add further complexity, a specific portion of the must undergoes maceration in terracotta amphorae for at least three months. The wine then matures elegantly in French and Slavonian oak barrels for a period of 24 months, concluding its journey with a long rest in the bottle before being tasted.
History and Curiosities
In 2000, Tenute Lunelli established the Podernovo Estate on the hills of Pisa, enhancing the historic vineyards dating back to the 1980s. This organic Sangiovese is the result of a rigorous selection of grapes through the Animavitis® project, which involves the separate harvesting of the finest micro-zones. The name Solenida pays tribute to the fossil shells that enrich the estate's soils, whose cellar was built from local stone in full harmony with the landscape. The excellence of the 2019 vintage is confirmed by 92 points from James Suckling.

Next to the winery there is a magnificent complex of late eighteenth century rural buildings in typical Tuscan style, which has been recently restored and transformed into exclusive apartments that offer guests an unforgettable stay in this enchanting and peaceful spot. The wines made at Tenuta Podernovo are Teuto, which matures for 20 months in large oak casks and highlights the zone’s natural vocation for producing a very elegant version of Sangiovese, and Aliotto, made from a blend of 60% Sangiovese together with Cabernet, Merlot and other local grapes. Both display an elegant tannic vein, well-balanced fruit and a finish of ingratiating intensity. The last release of Tenuta Podernovo is Auritea, a pure Cabernet Franc. All three wines have an elegant tannic texture, a balanced structure and a final of persuasive intensity: distinctive signature of this Estate. Read more
