Description
What kind of wine it is
Carapace by Tenuta Castelbuono is an organic red wine that fully expresses the vigour of the Sagrantino grape variety. As an expression of the Montefalco Sagrantino area, it combines a pronounced enveloping structure with a clear and defined aromatic profile. The bouquet opens with notes of blackberry and blueberry jam, enriched by hints of cherry in spirit, carob and rose petals, while elegant nuances of liquorice and chocolate emerge on the finish. On the palate, it is powerful and dynamic, driven by finely crafted tannins that ensure the wine has a profound capacity for evolution over time.
Where it comes from
The grapes grow in estate-owned vineyards located between Montefalco and Bevagna, historic wine-growing areas of Umbria. Some plots are part of the “I Patriarchi” project, created to protect particularly valuable historic vines. The silty-clay soils are well-structured and able to withstand summer drought, ensuring optimal agronomic balance. The vineyard is managed using the spur-pruned cordon training system, with a planting density of 6,250 vines per hectare and low yields to encourage greater concentration in the fruit.
How it is produced
Production begins with a rigorous manual harvest, followed by a cold pre-maceration, a technique aimed at maximising aromatic extraction. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats, accompanied by maceration on the skins for about fifteen to twenty days to extract colour and substance. Subsequently, the wine matures for twenty-four months in barrels, a crucial stage for smoothing the character of the Sagrantino grape and harmonising the complex flavour profile. The process concludes with a final ageing of at least twelve months, essential to achieve perfect organoleptic balance.

There was a need, though, for a new winery and the Lunelli family, thanks to their firm, long-held friendship with Arnaldo Pomodoro, one of the great contemporary artists, suggested that it should be he who designed it. The Maestro enthusiastically accepted and, after an initial survey of the area, he already had a project in mind.
The "Carapace" – as Pomodoro decided to call his winery – required no less than six years’ building work and it was inaugurated and opened to the public – for visits and tastings – in June 2012. It is a unique work of art that calls into question the boundaries between sculpture and architecture. It is the first sculpture in the world in which people can live and work, a unique work in which art and nature, sculpture and wine intermingle, underlining the exceptional nature of both the containing structure and of its contents. It offers itself to one’s gaze as a large copper-covered dome, engraved with fissures that remind one of the furrows in the earth that surrounds it. A sculpted element in the form of a red dart plunging into the soil highlights the work’s place in the landscape. Entering the "Carapace" means penetrating into one of Pomodoro’s sculptures, and one is aware right away of his artistic alphabet, which is immediately recognizable in the internal vault. This is a distinctive, special winery for distinctive, special wines. Read more
