Description

What kind of wine it is

San Leonardo Riesling is a dry organic white wine that captures the essence of Trentino. Made from Riesling grapes, it combines a significant structure with vibrant freshness. On the nose, notes of yellow fruits emerge, along with floral hints and aromatic herbs set against a mineral backdrop. On the palate, it is savoury, revealing a spicy and saline character balanced by elegant acidity. Its persistent profile pairs well with seafood dishes, shellfish and blue cheeses.

Where it comes from

San Leonardo's grapes grow in Val di Cembra, an outstanding Alpine region. The vineyards at 700 metres above sea level sink their roots into sandy soil within a sheltered valley, tempered by the climate of Lake Garda. This unique environment encourages a highly precise organoleptic development, giving the wine a pronounced minerality and the gustatory energy needed to support excellent ageing over time.

How it is produced

The process begins with a cold maceration, followed by gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks to preserve the aromatic purity. The wine matures for twelve months on the lees in first and second passage French oak barrels, then rests in the bottle. This careful artisan method results in a harmonious, fresh white wine with a deeply mountainous soul.

History and Curiosities

More than 1000 years ago, it was a monastery, but for over three centuries now San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Today, the San Leonardo estate is a garden of vineyards and roses, protected by the massive barrier of the Alps, which blunt the force of the cold northern winds while the valley floor benefits from, and in turn releases, warmth from nearby Lake Garda.

The tenuta remains an antique world, in which winemaking practices, still uncompromisingly artisanal, yield wines that are true gems of Italy’s wine tradition, marked by freshness, harmony, and an innate elegance.
