Description
What kind of wine it is
Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte from Tenuta San Giorgio is an organic red wine from Tuscany that faithfully interprets the character of Sangiovese. This structured and enveloping expression offers an elegant and spicy profile, enriched with hints of wild strawberries, cherry and plum, blending with notes of leather, cedarwood, dried mandarin peel and nuances of truffle. On the palate, it stands out for its balanced and noble tannins, which provide a dense texture and remarkable persistence.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the renowned Montalcino area. The hillside vineyards, situated at 450 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Amiata, benefit from a temperate Mediterranean climate and constant breezes. The vines grow on soils composed of clay and stones, enriched with Pliocene sediments, tuff and red earth. This geological complexity, combined with organic farming and low yields, encourages optimal grape development and gives the wine a profound territorial identity.
How it is produced
The vinification of Sangiovese begins with fermentation in stainless steel vats, accompanied by gentle pumping over. This process allows for prolonged maceration and a slow phenolic extraction, resulting in ripe and silky tannins. The ageing period includes twelve months in oak barrels, followed by a further two years in large Slavonian oak casks. A final period of rest allows the structure to consolidate, ensuring elegance and a clear aromatic definition that fully respects the nature of the grape variety.
History and Curiosities
Ugolforte pays tribute to the heroic brigand who defended Montalcino in the 12th century, embodying the proud spirit of this exceptional Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Since 1982, Tenuta San Giorgio has enhanced pure Sangiovese through rigorous organic farming. The vineyards, located at 450 metres above sea level on the slopes facing Monte Amiata, are caressed by Mediterranean breezes and protected by woods that preserve their biodiversity. The low yields per hectare result in a wine awarded 94 points by James Suckling.

Of the estate’s 142 hectares, just 28 are under vine, all devoted to Sangiovese – the variety that most deeply expresses this land. The rows are trained using the spurred cordon system and kept to very low yields, to preserve the purity and quality of the fruit. Each vineyard is organically farmed and shaped by the singular microclimate of Monte Amiata, the extinct volcano that rises to 1,738 meters and watches over the landscape. Read more
