Description

What kind of wine it is

Etna Rosso il Musmeci by Tenuta di Fessina is a still wine that enhances the identity of Nerello Mascalese. In the glass, it displays a pale ruby colour with garnet highlights. The bouquet intertwines notes of red fruit in alcohol, glacial mint and balsamic hints, enriched by nuances of ash, liquorice and undergrowth. On the palate, it stands out for its silky tannic texture and vibrant acidity. The sip, characterised by hints of morello cherry and nutmeg, evolves towards an enveloping finish, ideal for pairing with mature cheeses and flavourful pork-based dishes.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in Rovittello, on the north-eastern slope of the volcano. The vineyards are situated at seven hundred metres above sea level, where vines over eighty years old yield bunches with extraordinary aromatic concentration. The slope, north-east exposure and the unique soil of Etna give the fruit remarkable freshness. From this precious heritage comes a cru with a rigorous profile, a true expression of the winegrowing vocation of this high-altitude territory.

How it is produced

Harvesting takes place in October, followed by a rigorous selection of the bunches. The must is obtained through a gentle destemming and crushing, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature. Maceration on the skins lasts fifteen days. The wine's development continues with careful ageing in French oak barrels, which defines its complexity and structure. The process concludes with a prolonged rest in the bottle of at least four years, ensuring the wine's extraordinary longevity and capacity for evolution.

History and Curiosities

This Cru of Nerello Mascalese pays tribute to the dedication of the Musmeci family, guardians of vines over eighty years old on the slopes of the volcano. The Etna Rosso 2023 embodies the authentic Sicilian winemaking tradition, an excellence awarded 94 points by James Suckling. Its profound complexity develops through patient ageing in tonneaux and French oak barrels, culminating in at least four years of rest in the bottle. An elegant wine that encapsulates, in its intense aromas, the colours, landscapes, and fascinating history of this terroir.

From the beginning, Tentua di Fessina’s desire was to create "a place of beauty, between earth and spirit", rather than a cellar in the strict sense in which people, skills and energies could converge and in turn merge to enrich the intangible heritage of the Estate, made up of professional and human relationships, exchanges and ideas around the culture of wine and good living.

The project took shape in 2007 when the Tuscan producer Silvia and her husband Roberto purchased an old Nerello Mascalese vineyard dating back to the last century.
