Description
What kind of olive oil is this
Olio Extra Vergine d’Oliva by Col d’Orcia is an organic extra virgin olive oil pressed from a selection of Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo and Olivastra olives grown in Tuscany and extracted mechanically. It displays a colour ranging from intense green to yellow. The nose offers an aromatic bouquet characterised by notes of Reinette apple and freshly cut herbs. On the palate, the oil reveals a structured, fruity profile, balancing a smooth, fluid texture with a measured bitterness and a distinct peppery pungency. This dynamic flavour is underpinned by its naturally high polyphenol content.
Geographical origin
The olive groves are situated on the south-western slopes of Sant’Angelo in Colle, a subzone in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany. The Col d’Orcia estate has been a fixture here since 1933, sharing its land with vineyards renowned for producing Brunello di Montalcino. Managed using entirely organic farming practices, the property integrates cultivation with the local ecosystem. This specific terroir imparts a clearly defined vegetal character to the oil, ensuring an authentic agricultural footprint.
Production process
Production begins with the manual harvesting of the olives, with each variety carefully separated and processed at its optimum stage of ripeness. Extraction is carried out solely through mechanical processes, ensuring the natural integrity of the fruit remains intact. Following extraction, the different oils are expertly blended to achieve a harmonious balance between fluidity, bitterness and spice. This careful assembly results in a structured finish, where natural polyphenols stabilise the flavour profile.
History and Heritage
Produced by Col d’Orcia, a historic Montalcino estate founded in 1933, this organic extra virgin olive oil is crafted from the 2025 harvest on the south-western slopes of Sant’Angelo in Colle. The estate’s olive groves share a unique terroir with the vineyards of the famous Brunello di Montalcino. The estate's origins date back to the first half of the 17th century when the family of the Sienese noble knights Della Ciaia established a property in the Sant'Angelo in Colle area that became larger and larger year by year. In the second half of the 19th century, it passed into the hands of the Servadio family and then the Franceschi family.
In 1973, Count Alberto Marone Cinzano took over the estate, intending to contribute to the development and affirmation of Montalcino and its Brunello on world markets.
Our Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento 2016 took second place in the 2024 ‘Enthusiast 100’, the ranking of the best wines of the year signed by the influential American magazine ‘Wine Enthusiast’.
Another wonderful piece of news, which follows Col d'Orcia's nomination as ‘European Winery of the Year’ at the 2024 Wine Star Awards of ‘Wine Enthusiast’ and confirms, for the third consecutive year, our wines at the top of the international rankings and critics. In 2022 the Brunello di Montalcino 2017 entered the top 100 of ‘Wine Spectator’, in 2023 the Poggio al Vento 2016 stood out in the top 100 of ‘James Suckling. Read more
