Description
What kind of wine it is
Terre Bianche Cuvée 161 by Sella & Mosca is a still white wine from the Alghero Torbato denomination, produced in Sardinia. Made from Torbato grapes, vinified in steel and partly in barrels with ageing on the lees, it displays bright golden reflections and a bouquet reminiscent of Mediterranean scrub, thistle and medicinal herbs. On the palate, the initial softness evolves into a dry and savoury sip, enriched by mineral nuances and marine notes. The lively acidity ensures persistence, making it an elegant aperitif and the ideal companion for seafood starters, shellfish, fresh cheeses and baked fish dishes.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in northern Sardinia, from vineyards grown on calcareous soils of marine origin that inspire its name. The vines, protected from excessive heat thanks to the Sardinian pergola system, benefit from a unique coastal microclimate. The grape variety boasts ancient roots: introduced by the Phoenicians, it became established in local agricultural tradition during the Catalan period. Sella & Mosca has dedicated years to researching this variety, enhancing its deep connection with the Mediterranean landscape and the identity of the coastal territory.
How it is produced
The production process begins with a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by gentle pressing and static decantation. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, mainly in steel and for a small portion in wood. To preserve its natural freshness, malolactic fermentation is not carried out. The wine gains complexity thanks to ageing on the lees for six months. This maturation period, carried out between steel and barrels, gives roundness and breadth to the sip, while maintaining the varietal expression of the fruit intact.
History and Curiosities
Introduced to Sardinia by the Phoenicians, the ancient Torbato grape variety has deep roots in the history and Catalan heritage of Alghero. Sella & Mosca has enhanced its value by vinifying it as a single varietal to create Terre Bianche Cuvée 161, an authentic expression of the marine-origin limestone soils. Thanks to the combination of traditional expertise and cutting-edge techniques, such as the use of aerial photography to monitor ideal conditions, the winery ensures grapes of exceptional quality. This meticulous care results in a white wine of extraordinary structural complexity and elegance.
