Description

What kind of wine it is

Terre Brune is an excellent Sardinian red that showcases a blend of Carignano and Bovaleddu. An expression of the Carignano del Sulcis Superiore area, this unfiltered wine stands out for its deep and intense aromatic profile. Notes of dark fruits blend harmoniously with hints of aromatic herbs, cocoa, sweet spices and clear marine nuances. On the palate, it offers a warm and smooth sip, supported by elegant tannins and vibrant savouriness. Its velvety density leads to a harmonious and persistent finish, making it the ideal choice to accompany structured dishes based on game, flavourful roasts and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Basso Sulcis, in south-western Sardinia. The vineyards are cultivated as ungrafted bush vines, ensuring a strong connection with the environment. The climate, with dry summers and mild winters, guarantees perfect ripening of the grapes. The sandy and calcareous soils with a loose texture impart structural character and savouriness. Santadi adopts strict environmental sustainability practices to protect the ecosystem and offer an authentic expression of the territory.

How it is produced

Production begins at the start of autumn with meticulous manual harvesting of the bunches. The process continues with alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks for fifteen days, accompanied by careful maceration of the skins to extract polyphenols. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, essential for giving smoothness to the structure. The wine then rests in new, fine-grained French oak barrels for a period of sixteen to eighteen months, acquiring complexity and aromatic depth. The process concludes with a final maturation of twelve months, an essential phase to integrate the various sensory nuances and achieve perfect overall balance.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1984 as the first Sardinian red wine aged in barrique, Terre Brune represents the excellence of Cantina Santadi and the Sulcis region. This majestic blend of Carignano and Bovaleddu comes from ancient vines grown as ungrafted bush vines, a rarity that gives the wine extraordinary concentration and an authentic connection to its roots. A true masterpiece of elegance and persistence, it has received multiple awards from critics, including the Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, the Quattro Viti from Vitae, and 93 points from James Suckling.

Since then, the only direction has been upwards, as the Santadi wines continue to spread and reap appreciation worldwide.
