Description

What kind of wine it is

Maschio da Monte by Santa Barbara is a still red wine with controlled designation of origin that expresses the identity of Rosso Piceno in the Marche region, created from a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese. It stands out for its deep ruby red colour and an aromatic profile where violet, small black berries, spices and delicate vegetal nuances emerge. On the palate, the structure is supported by soft and elegant tannins, in perfect balance with a pleasant freshness. After fermentation in stainless steel and ageing in barrels, the tasting experience concludes with a long and persistent finish, perfect when paired with flavourful meats and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the hills of the Marche, specifically from the municipality of Barbara, in the heart of Rosso Piceno. The vineyards grow on clay-limestone soils at about two hundred and fifty metres above sea level, benefiting from a north-west exposure that encourages balanced ripening. The spurred cordon training system promotes optimal ripening of the bunches, giving the wine a significant structure. This Marche territory boasts a millennia-old agricultural history, with origins dating back to the sixth century.

How it is produced

The vinification process begins with fermentation in stainless steel tanks, a technical choice aimed at preserving the integrity and purity of the fruit. Subsequently, the wine matures through ageing in barrels, essential for smoothing the tannic texture and enriching the bouquet with spicy notes. This method allows the strength of the grape varieties to be harmonised with freshness, ensuring an easy-drinking wine. The result is a sip of great balance, characterised by a marked persistence and a clean finish.

History and Curiosities

With roots dating back to the Byzantine era of the 6th century, the winemaking vocation of the Marche region is expressed in Rosso Piceno Maschio da Monte. Born from the intuition of Stefano Antonucci, the wine originated from a meeting in Stuttgart with his friend Pino Sassano to enhance local grape varieties. By blending Montepulciano and Sangiovese grown on the estate's 45 hectares, this label celebrates the territory. The artisanal care is crowned by 95 points from Luca Maroni, confirming its excellence.

The name Santa Barbara pays homage to our land, our tradition and those we worship. The history of this place dates back to the 6th century when Senigallia was a Byzantine city and a Lombardic (and therefore "barbarian") outpost was
set up in a nearby village. Since then, that village took the name of Barbara which is where our winery is located today, having the privilege of being housed in an old monastery.

Our winery is located 25 km from the Adriatic Sea and is located on the hills that run between the Misa and Nevola rivers. Here a team of professionals works in the winery and vineyards every day, fuelled by passion, determination and a pinch of creativity so that our grapes maintain their beauty and express the quality of our land.
