Description

What kind of wine it is

The Fallwind Lagrein Riserva from San Michele Appiano is a still red wine made from Lagrein grapes in Alto Adige. This wine, crafted by San Michele Appiano, displays an almost impenetrable dark red colour, offering a tasting experience of remarkable depth and roundness. Vinification in steel is followed by malolactic fermentation, essential for softening the palate. Careful maturation in wooden barrels and subsequent resting in steel provide a full structure, resulting in excellent balance and an enveloping persistence on the palate.

Where it comes from

The grapes are sourced from selected single vineyards in the areas of Gries and Leitach, within the Bolzano basin. In this Alto Adige microclimate, soils characterised by moraine and gravel deposits alternate with warm, sandy soils, ensuring optimal ripening of the bunches. The south and south-west exposure promotes constant sunlight, a key factor in developing the wine’s aromatic concentration and structure. These pedoclimatic conditions authentically enhance the varietal characteristics of this native grape variety.

How it is produced

The manual harvest takes place around mid-October, with careful selection to maintain low yields and ensure excellent raw material. After the initial vinification, twelve months of maturation in wooden barrels aim to broaden the olfactory complexity. The nose opens with clear aromas of cherry, blackberry and dried plum, introducing a fleshy and smooth palate. If allowed to decant briefly, this red expresses its structure at its best, making it ideal to pair with mature cheeses, Tyrolean goulash, game and meat stews.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1907, the San Michele Appiano cooperative winery brings together numerous families of passionate winegrowers. Under the guidance of oenologist Hans Terzer, the Fallwind Lagrein Riserva 2023 is produced from the prized vineyards of Gries and Leitach, in Bolzano. The careful manual harvest in mid-October and the particularly suitable moraine and gravelly soils give the wine a distinctive identity. This elegant red expresses all its complexity thanks to careful ageing in barrique-tonneau, harmoniously completed by a balanced final maturation in steel.
