Description

What kind of wine it is

The Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria from San Marzano is a still red wine that embodies the essence of its region of origin. Made from Primitivo grapes grown on vines around sixty years old, it reveals itself in the glass with a deep ruby red colour. The bouquet recalls plum, cherry jam, tobacco and subtle spicy notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied, offering a soft, rich sip supported by fine tannins. It elegantly accompanies robust first courses, red meats, roasts, game and mature cheeses, and is also excellent as a meditation wine.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the municipalities of San Marzano and Sava, in the heart of the Primitivo di Manduria area. The Apulian territory enjoys a warm and dry climate, characterised by low rainfall and significant temperature variations that ensure excellent ripening. The vineyards are rooted in residual red soil, a fine-textured earth distinguished by a calcareous subsoil and a marked presence of iron oxides. San Marzano tends these historic vineyards by faithfully following the seasonal variations, to translate the authentic expression of the local terroir into the glass.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a manual harvest in the second half of September, aiming for slight overripening on the vine. After destemming and crushing, the must undergoes a pre-fermentation cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature using selected yeasts, followed by racking with gentle presses and malolactic fermentation in steel tanks. The maturation phase continues for twelve months in fine French and American oak barrels, a period that gives breadth to the structure and enveloping notes of cocoa and vanilla on the finish.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1962 from the passion of Cantine San Marzano, this iconic Apulian red wine tells the story of ancient local traditions. Its name celebrates an invaluable heritage of vines around 60 years old, cultivated on soils rich in iron oxides. The history of the grape variety is fascinating: introduced in the seventeenth century by Benedictine monks, today it represents absolute excellence, enhanced by a long ageing in barriques. An extraordinary quality, consecrated by numerous international awards and the prestigious 99 points from Luca Maroni.

In 1962 19 vine growers from San Marzano, whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish "Cantine San Marzano".

Through the decades this coooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers, using modern and technologically advanced plants and producing elegant wines without forgetting the obligation to the very old Apulian wine tradition.

Nowadays the fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and sensibility with contemporary techniques enables us to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characters, marvellously reflecting individual attention, seasonal variation and local terroir.
