Description

What type of wine it is

Il Pumo Negroamaro by San Marzano is a still red wine from Puglia, produced exclusively from Negroamaro grapes. Belonging to the Salento denomination, this wine presents a structured, velvety profile with a harmonious palate, characterised by a long and pleasantly savoury finish. The aromatic bouquet is intense, offering spicy notes and fruity hints of blackcurrant and wild berries. The production involves thermo-controlled maceration and fermentation in stainless steel, thus preserving the freshness and integrity of the original fruit.

Where it comes from

This Negroamaro originates in the Salento area, specifically in San Marzano di San Giuseppe, in Puglia. The vineyards are located at an altitude of approximately 100 metres above sea level. The soil hosting the vines, cultivated using the espalier system, is clayey, medium-textured and shallow, enriched by a good presence of rocky fragments and stones. These specific pedoclimatic conditions give the wine its marked savouriness and remarkable aromatic concentration.

How it is produced

The production of Il Pumo Negroamaro begins with the harvest, carried out during the second and third weeks of September. In the cellar, the grapes undergo thermo-controlled maceration which lasts for about 10 days, followed by alcoholic fermentation activated by selected yeasts. The process concludes with ageing in stainless steel, a technique that allows the wine to stabilise while keeping the varietal characteristics of the Negroamaro intact, before being ready for tasting.

In 1962 19 vine growers from San Marzano, whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish "Cantine San Marzano".

Through the decades this coooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers, using modern and technologically advanced plants and producing elegant wines without forgetting the obligation to the very old Apulian wine tradition.

Nowadays the fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and sensibility with contemporary techniques enables us to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characters, marvellously reflecting individual attention, seasonal variation and local terroir.
