Description
What kind of wine it is
The Pinot Noir 850 by Rosset Terroir is a still red wine that embodies the essence of heroic viticulture. Produced under a controlled designation of origin with Pinot Noir grapes in the Aosta Valley, it presents a clear ruby red colour. On the nose, it releases elegant floral notes of violet and rose, combined with vivid hints of cherry and wild strawberry. On the palate, it impresses with freshness and savouriness, enriched by a delicate spiciness that leads to a long and persistent finish, outlining a refined and balanced profile, following maturation in oak barrels.
Where it comes from
The vineyards are located among the hills of the Aosta Valley, cultivated at eight hundred metres above sea level with a favourable north-south exposure. In this mountainous setting, the vines sink their roots into sandy soil, with a high planting density that reflects careful vineyard management. These particular climatic and geological conditions allow the grape variety to express great aromatic finesse, transferring the authentic and savoury soul of high-altitude wines into the glass.
How it is produced
The harvest is carried out by hand at the beginning of October, followed by fermentation in oak vats and a hot post-fermentation maceration. The wine then matures for about twelve months in French oak barrels, an essential step in defining its structure. Excellent with mushroom risottos, truffle-based dishes, rabbit or duck, it gives its best with one hour of decanting and a serving temperature between sixteen and eighteen degrees.
History and Curiosities
Born in 2001 from the vision of the Rosset Terroir winery, Pinot Noir 850 is a splendid expression of the heroic viticulture of the Aosta Valley. Grown at eight hundred metres above sea level on sandy soils, this artisanal red comes to life thanks to the expertise of oenologist Matteo Moretto. The grapes, hand-picked in October, ferment in oak vats before completing their journey with a twelve-month ageing in French barriques. The result is a fine high-altitude wine that expresses elegance, persistence, and a deep connection with the Alpine territory.

The story began to take shape in 2001, with the planting of the first three hectares of vineyard in the municipality of Saint-Christophe, just outside Aosta. The first varieties grown were Chardonnay, Syrah, and the native Cornalin. In just a few years, the estate expanded its vineyard surface and selected new, highly suited plots, where Muscat Blanc, Pinot Gris, and additional parcels of Syrah were also introduced.
A turning point came in 2017, when Rosset Terroir ventured beyond 900 meters above sea level, in the village of Villeneuve. On particularly steep slopes, in a context of heroic viticulture, the cultivation of the traditional Petite Arvine grape variety comes to life, from which the winery’s flagship wine is born: the Sopraquota 900, awarded in 2021 as Italy’s Best White Wine by Gambero Rosso ‘s Vini d’Italia guide and included in James Suckling’s Top 100 World Wines in 2024.
Today, Rosset Terroir manages around 13 hectares of vineyards and produces approximately 50,000 bottles per year, carefully selecting the region’s most promising plots and combining the expertise of seasoned technicians with modern, functional facilities. Read more
