Description

What kind of wine it is

Rolly Gassmann Alsace Gewurztraminer is an aromatic still white wine with a pale straw yellow colour, faithfully expressing the character of the Gewurztraminer grape. The bouquet is distinctly spicy, featuring clear aromas of ginger, cinnamon and fragrant orange zest. On the palate, it boasts an opulent structure, maintaining excellent balance thanks to the freshness imparted by hints of grapefruit. This white wine is ideally suited to spicy Asian cuisine, and also pairs perfectly with mature cheeses and delicate dishes based on poultry or lean fish.

Where it comes from

The grapes are sourced from the areas of Rorschwihr and Bergheim, in the heart of Alsace. This region benefits from the protection of the Vosges mountain range, making it one of the driest areas in France. The hot summers favour perfect ripening of the grapes, while the remarkable complexity of the soils, rich in limestone, marl and clay with sandy and granitic veins, defines the structure of the wine. In this privileged context, Rolly Gassmann has been cultivating the land since 1611, following strict organic and sustainable practices.

How it is produced

After meticulous manual selection at full ripeness, the grapes undergo gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in individual tanks thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts, which are essential for preserving the fruit's identity. The use of separate vinification for each individual vineyard allows the specific characteristics of each plot to be fully expressed. This is followed by a short rest of a few months and a long maturation of around two years before release, a key stage for harmonising and enhancing the final flavour profile.

History and Curiosities

Active in Alsace since 1611, the prestigious winery Rolly Gassmann enhances an exceptional terroir protected by the Vosges mountains through sustainable and organic methods. This captivating Gewurztraminer is made from hand-picked grapes harvested at perfect ripeness, vinified separately with indigenous yeasts to highlight the identity of each individual plot. Careful bottle ageing forges extraordinary harmony, celebrated with 91 points from Vinous, resulting in an opulent and spicy glass that tells the story of centuries of pure French winemaking tradition.

Rolly Gassmann is based in the small village of Rorschwirhr, in the Northernmost part of the Upper Rhine Department in Alsace. The property consists of about 50 hectares of vineyards, divided between the municipalties of Rorschwirhr and Bergheim, allows for a unique variety of soils: clay, sand, limestone and granite alternate in this area, creating wines with a strong and decisive character.

The winery is now run by Marie-Thérèse, Louis and their son Pierre Gassmann. The production is about 300,000 bottles per year, only 20% of which are destined for export outside France. The wines are powerful, precise, played on the difficult ridge of a vibrant acidity and balanced sweetness: Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer by Rolly-Gassmann give pure enjoyment especially to those who have the patience to wait for the legendary ability to evolve in the bottle.
