Description

What kind of wine it is

Rocca di Montemassi Sassabruna is an enveloping organic red wine created from a harmonious blend of Sangiovese, Syrah and Merlot. In the glass, it displays a very intense ruby colour and reveals an aromatic profile centred on notes of black cherry, ripe plum and blackberry. On the palate, it offers a full and velvety body, supported by soft, mature tannins that elegantly merge with hints of Mediterranean herbs, tobacco and sweet spices. Tasting this wine from the Tuscan Maremma concludes with a lively mineral freshness and a warm, persistent finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the picturesque area of Roccastrada, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. The Rocca di Montemassi estate enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which ensures a marked diurnal temperature range, favouring the optimal ripening of the grapes. The vines sink their roots into sandy and clay soils rich in stones. This natural drainage allows for deep rooting, giving the wine a distinctive savoury character and a personality deeply connected to its land of origin.

How it is produced

The bunches, harvested at full ripeness, ferment in vertical vats for about twenty days. After completing malolactic fermentation to soften the structure, the wine matures for twelve months in French oak barrels. This is followed by a further four months of ageing to perfectly harmonise the flavour profile. After a brief decanting, this intense red expresses itself best when paired with game dishes, classic pappardelle with wild boar ragù, grilled meats and hard cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 2000 in Roccastrada, Tenuta Rocca di Montemassi skilfully combines modern technologies and ancient traditions to create wines of great character. The estate follows the principles of permaculture, integrating a thriving ecosystem of ancient grains, orchards, and native livestock with its vineyards. From this deep connection with the land comes Sassabruna, an excellent organic Maremma Toscana DOC that expresses all the strength of the region in an enveloping sip, awarded 90 points by James Suckling.
