Description
What kind of wine it is
Le Focaie by Rocca di Montemassi is an organic red wine, an expression of Maremma Toscana, made from a blend of Sangiovese and international grape varieties. It displays an intense ruby colour enriched with violet hues. On the nose, it releases scents of violet, cherry, wild berries and tobacco. On the palate, it is dry and reveals a balanced structure, supported by a pleasant freshness and a soft finish. It is ideal for pairing with Tuscan cured meats, grilled meats and mature pecorino cheese.
Where it comes from
The Rocca di Montemassi estate is located in the heart of the province of Grosseto, nestled between the Colline Metallifere and the Maremma coastline. The area benefits from intense sunlight and fertile soils, ideal conditions for giving the wine a lively and structured character. The vineyards, which host both local and international varieties, are managed according to the principles of organic farming, in full respect of the authentic and rustic soul of the land.
How it is produced
The grapes, harvested at full ripeness, are vinified separately in vertical fermenters at a controlled temperature for about ten days. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, a fundamental process to give roundness to the palate. The wine is then blended into its final blend to mature in large French oak barrels. This stage encourages the development of the aromatic bouquet while preserving the fragrance of the fruit, before the final ageing period.
History and Curiosities
Produced at the Rocca di Montemassi Estate, founded in 2000 between the Colline Metallifere and the coast, the Maremma Toscana DOC Le Focaie 2023 fully reflects the agricultural vocation of the area. Under the guidance of oenologist Alessandro Gallo, the winery combines modern organic and sustainable viticulture with the most authentic rural tradition, also celebrated through its own Museum of Rural Civilisation. This constant pursuit of ethical and oenological excellence is confirmed by prestigious international awards, such as the 90 points awarded by James Suckling.
