Description

What kind of wine it is

The Champagne Extra Brut Les Châtaigniers, produced by R. Pouillon, is a single-parcel Blanc de Noirs made exclusively from Meunier grapes. Crafted strictly using the Traditional Method, it offers a sensory profile that evokes the freshness of winter air and the warmth of a hearth. On the palate, it is enveloping, with notes of apple and blackberry merging into a warm and comforting finish. The carefully measured dosage defines a dry and incisive style, supported by an elegant structured texture.

Where it comes from

The grapes come exclusively from the Le Bois des Châtaigniers parcel, located in the commune of Festigny, in the Flagot Valley within the broader Marne Valley. The vineyards are situated at around one hundred and fifty metres above sea level, a position that encourages tension and precision in the sip. The terroir is characterised by a surface layer of clay-limestone and a distinctive Lutetian subsoil. This specific geological composition helps to define a clear structure, giving the Meunier a recognisable identity linked to its place of origin.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with spontaneous fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts. The base wine matures in oak barrels of various ages for a period of twelve months, enriched by the practice of bâtonnage. Subsequently, the prise de mousse takes place according to the principles of the Traditional Method, followed by a slow maturation on the lees for around thirty-six to forty-eight months. This long rest elevates the wine's aromatic complexity, while preserving a dry and essential profile.

History and Curiosities

Described as a “counterculture” wine, Les Châtaigniers 2020 represents R. Pouillon’s bold gamble on pure Meunier, a grape variety historically foreign to the family tradition. Born from a single plot in Festigny, in the Marne Valley, this elegant Extra Brut Champagne comes to life through meticulous artisanal craftsmanship with indigenous yeasts and ageing in oak barrels. The long rest on the lees imparts a vibrant profile, where the freshness of winter air meets notes of apple and blackberry, for a warm, enveloping and comforting sip.

In 1947, Roger Poullin, who had been selling his grapes to negociant, decided to make his own Champagne from a small parcel he owned in the village of Muntigny. With the help of Louis Baulant (his uncle and a famous oenologue) he discovered the art of vinification. As his passion grew through the years, he decided to create and sell his own brand.

In 1964, James (Roger and Bernadette's only child) started working with his father while developing his knowledge as a winemaker. He was joined a year later by his wife, Josette, born in Champagne as well.
As Recoltant-Manipultant, the Poullons own their own press and do not work in a coop. The control every step of the process, from the vine to the bottle.

After the death of Roger Poullon in 1993, and his spouse 2 years later, Fabrice (James's yougest son) joins the family business and bring with him his background in viticulture, oenology and marketing. His wife Elodie follow in 2000 to help on the marketing side.

As a young winemaker, James modernized the operation with the use of enamelled vats, hydraulic tractors and gyropaletts. Later, Fabrice introduced sustainable agriculture and started to export Roger Pouillon Champagne to the US, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Australia and UK.
