Description
Wine profile
Poggio Bonelli’s Cretum is a Tuscan IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) red wine, a fascinating blend that combines the characteristics of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the glass, it displays a bright ruby colour, whilst on the nose it reveals clear aromas of ripe red fruit, accompanied by earthy notes, hints of mushrooms and subtle floral touches. Aged in steel and wooden barrels, it reveals a medium-bodied, lively and satisfying palate. The excellent balance between fresh acidity and fine, elegant tannins makes it extremely versatile, ideal for pairing with grilled meats and semi-matured cheeses.
Origin
This Sienese red originates in Castelnuovo Berardenga, from vineyards situated at approximately three hundred metres above sea level. The historic Poggio Bonelli winery, whose roots date back to the Middle Ages, cultivates its vines with full respect for the land. With a yield limited to fifty quintals per hectare, the estate ensures a careful and rigorous selection of the bunches. Meticulous agronomic work results in a wine with a measured and precise structure, capable of authentically reflecting the noble wine-growing vocation of these hills.
Production method
The grapes undergo separate fermentation in stainless steel tanks for about twenty days, with prolonged skin contact designed to encourage optimal colour and phenolic extraction. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the individual batches are carefully blended. Subsequent ageing involves a skilful period in steel and wooden barrels, a decisive stage for imparting complexity and structural roundness. This rigorous technical process defines a red with a fragrant profile, characterised by an ageing potential that can extend up to ten years.
History and curiosities

A property that was sought after by some of the most important Sienese families, Poggio Bonelli has belonged to numerous different families throughout the centuries. Firstly, the Spennali family owned it during the Middle Ages and passed it into the hands of the Piccolomini family in the second half of the 16th century. In the following century, probably for dynastic reasons, it became the property of the Landucci family. Finally, at the beginning of the 21st century, it came to belong to the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, the most ancient Italian bank in the territory of Siena. The wine estate is owned by the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, which acts as a shareholder, while a team of professionals with long-standing experience in wine-making carries out the management. The result is a human, dynamic, and solid business. Read more
