Description

Starting with the 2020 vintage - which demonstrated the incredible resilience of Mother Nature at such a difficult and complex time in the world - we decided to change the label of our Piodilei Chardonnay, recovering its 'historic' label. This is a true "return to the origins" to celebrate the great challenge that we have been pursuing since 1985 thanks to the courageous and pioneering choice of the fourth generation, Pio Boffa: to produce a white wine with body, structure and longevity starting from the great potential of the Langa terroir, initially planting Chardonnay in the Barbaresco area and then later also in the Barolo area. We recall that the name of this Piodilei wine is a tribute to the key role that the Women - or rather the She - have always played in our Family, to their character and volition, very similar to the character of the Langa land.

The Pio Cesare was founded in 1881 by our Princess Victoria, Pio Cesare (Caesar Pius name and surname). Pio Cesare and 'was among the first in the second half' of 800, to believe in the great potential 'for Barolo, Barbaresco and other great wines of the Langhe and it' was among the first to produce them and make them known. For five generations, our wines vinified in our cellars old Alba, traveled and bounded by the old Roman walls of the City '. We recently completed a huge renovation, with large investments in technology, which allowed us to exploit more and more 'the historical and architectural importance of our winery, the only ones left in the old town of Citta' di Alba.

We own over 50 hectares of vineyards in positions of particular value, both in the Barolo region (in the vineyards of Serralunga d'Alba Cascina "Ornate" and the "Colombaro" Grinzane Cavour in the vineyards of Cascina Gusto , the vineyard in La Morra "Roncaglia" and the vineyard Barolo, Novello "Ravera"), both in the area of Barbaresco (Treiso to the vineyards of Cascina "Il Bricco" and the "San Stefanetto"), as well as to Sinio, Diano d'Alba and Trezzo Tinella. We also, in small part, of grapes grown by "incumbent" for generations that we cultivate their vineyards, which are also located in areas highly suited, according to our guidelines and our strict quality controls.

All our wines are vinified by us according to the most 'thorough traditional techniques dellla our house and after an appropriate aging in barrels and French oak barrels and stainless steel, are left to rest in the dark bottle and the coolness of our cellars.

The quantity 'produced are always kept strictly limited, to maintain quality' of our wines always more 'high level. The meticulous dedication to quality 'has enabled us, in more' than 100 years of history, to reach a position of notoriety prominent 'among the companies producing wines of Alba: our wines are better known and appreciated by customers in Italy and beyond 40 countries worldwide.

Our Barbera d'Alba 2019 has been included with number 38 in the very prestigious Top 100 Wines of 2021 List by the American magazine Wine Spectator, which awarded it 92 points.

Harvest he harvest of our white grapes began on 1 September with the Chardonnay (and on 3 September with the Sauvignon Blanc). In particular, the vineyards we use for the production of our Piodilei - the historic 'Il Bricco di Treiso' in the Barbaresco area and the more recently acquired 'Mosconi' in Monforte d'Alba in the Barolo area - were harvested between 1 and 5 September. At the time of harvest, the grapes were very ripe and perfectly healthy, with a rich accumulation of sugar and balanced acidity, thanks to the perfect weather conditions and not too high temperatures.
