Description
What kind of wine it is
Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino is a prestigious Tuscan red wine made from Sangiovese grapes. In the glass, it reveals an intense ruby colour and an enveloping bouquet. The aromas range from ripe red fruit to delicate hints of violet and dried flowers, enriched by notes of cocoa, cherries in spirit and oregano. On the palate, it is elegant and structured, driven by succulent tannins and a pleasant freshness that enhances its balance. It pairs harmoniously with rich pork dishes, game preparations and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This Brunello di Montalcino is produced at the Pian delle Vigne estate, located south-west of the village, overlooking the Orcia river valley. The vineyards, situated at an altitude of about 130 metres above sea level, benefit from optimal exposure. The estate covers 184 hectares, of which 65 are planted with vines, surrounded by woods and olive groves. The estate takes its name from a picturesque nineteenth-century railway station located on the property. In this setting, Pian delle Vigne works to enhance the authenticity of the Tuscan terroir, preserving the aromatic integrity of the grapes and the elegance of the Montalcino landscape.
How it is produced
The destemmed grapes undergo a gentle pressing before starting alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Maceration continues for fifteen days, defining the structure and finesse of the tannins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in large oak casks for over two years. The production process concludes with careful bottle ageing, an essential step to consolidate the balance of flavour and final complexity.
History and Curiosities
Acquired by the Antinori family in 1995, Tenuta Pian delle Vigne is located south-west of Montalcino, in the picturesque Val d’Orcia. The estate, which takes its name from an old railway station situated within its grounds, cultivates pure Sangiovese across 65 hectares. To preserve the authenticity of the terroir, the company has always followed the philosophy of large barrels, allowing its wines to mature in large oak casks. This approach, faithful to tradition, enhances the integrity of the fruit and gives the prestigious Brunello a vibrant elegance.
