Description

What kind of wine it is

Petra Alto is a still red wine that embodies the authenticity of the Tuscan region. Made from Sangiovese grapes, it presents a bright ruby red colour. On the nose, it offers an intense bouquet, where notes of undergrowth and humus intertwine with hints of cherry, violet, raspberry and blueberry. On the palate, it reveals an elegant and balanced structure, supported by vibrant freshness and a pleasant savouriness. The tannins, pronounced yet perfectly integrated, lead the sip towards a persistent and satisfying mineral finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Alto vineyard, located in the San Lorenzo area. This plot is characterised by clay soil rich in stones, a significant slope and natural water drainage. These conditions favour balanced vine growth, trained using the Guyot method, allowing for ideal ripening of the bunches. Petra adopts meticulous agronomic zoning to enhance the unique nuances of the area, resulting in a Sangiovese with authentic character and strong identity.

How it is produced

The vinification of Petra Alto is designed to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine matures on fine lees in large oak barrels for eighteen months, a process that softens the tannic texture and enriches the aromatic complexity without overpowering the character of the grape variety. This is followed by bottle ageing for at least six months, essential for balancing the structure and pronounced savoury component. The result is a red wine of excellent balance, distinguished by a dense and profound taste texture.

History and Curiosities

Born from the vision of Vittorio Moretti and oenologist Giuseppe Caviola, Petra enhances the Tuscan territory by combining iconic architecture with meticulous agronomic zoning. On the steep clay slopes of the Alto vineyard in San Lorenzo, the estate cultivates its grapes in harmony with nature. From this well-defined identity comes a refined pure Sangiovese, capable of translating the essence of the landscape into an experience of extraordinary elegance.

Petra, like "pietra" (stone) in Latin. Like the solidity of work, which both Francesca and Vittorio Moretti (father and daughter) have based their project upon. Like the historic fragments found out in these lands, giving evidence of a far away past , leading from the Old Greek civilization to Etruria (ancient name for Tuscany) and from there to France. An ambitious project that claims to interpret the territory, to grasp the characteristics that make it unique, making it an exceptional wine-growing area. To live up to this, Vittorio Moretti entrusted the agronomic investigation to Prof. Attilio Scienza, the greatest expert in zoning, while the structure was designed by Mario Botta, who gave the winery the status of a true architecture of work and hospitality.
