Description
What kind of wine is it
Cuvee Alain is a still white wine from Veneto produced by Orto di Venezia. The result of a carefully crafted blend of Malvasia and Vermentino, it appears in the glass with a straw yellow hue. On the nose, it offers clear floral aromas, while the palate is soft and remarkably persistent. An elegant aromatic profile that ensures excellent evolution over time, with an ageing potential in the cellar of five to ten years. It pairs perfectly with lean fish dishes, shellfish and selected cheeses, expressing itself best when served at a temperature of 12-14 °C.
Where does it come from
This white wine originates in the Venetian lagoon, specifically on the Island of Sant’Erasmo. The vineyards benefit from unique island microclimates and soils whose characteristics are reflected in the aromatic freshness and purity on the palate. The water balance of the land is regulated by an ancestral drainage system equipped with tidal sluices. The agricultural project of Orto di Venezia is led by Michel Thoulouze, who relies on the technical expertise of agronomists Lydia and Claude Bourguignon and the valuable advice of Alain Graillot.
How is it produced
Viticulture focuses on total respect for soil health, foregoing herbicides in favour of cover crops. A distinctive feature is the use of ungrafted vines, planted directly in the lagoon soil without any grafting onto American rootstock. Expert agronomic management and the restoration of tidal sluices allow for optimal grape ripening. The winemaking process aims to preserve varietal purity, resulting in a soft texture and a floral profile that are the truest expression of the original terroir.
History and Curiosities
The Cuvée Alain 2021 originates on the island of Sant’Erasmo, where the Thoulouze family has revived a noble winemaking tradition, already appreciated in the eighteenth century by the Doges and Casanova. Under the guidance of international experts, the winery cultivates Malvasia and Vermentino on their own roots, planting the vines directly in the lagoon soil without grafting onto American rootstocks or using herbicides. This sustainable approach restores the ancient system of drainage with tidal sluices and the use of cover crops, resulting in a smooth wine that embodies the essence of Venice.

The ancestral drainage system on the island has been renovated. Rainwater collects in canals that cross the vineyard and the water is evacuated by opening sluice gates at low tide. Before planting the first vines, the ground was prepared only with plants (barley, radish).
the vines were planted by direct seeding without any ploughing following the principles of Claude Bourguignon and of course, never any weedkiller. An assembly of antique Italian grape varieties with a dominance of the Istrien Malvoisie in order to revive the flavour of wines in the past, before the philoxera epidemic, the vines were not grafted onto roots imported from America but planted directly. This is one of the reasons for ORTO's exceptional quality. Read more
