Description

What kind of wine it is

Oddero Nizza is a still red wine from Piedmont made from Barbera grapes. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby red colour which, over time, develops elegant garnet highlights. Its aromatic profile ranges from notes of red fruit to bitter cocoa and roasted coffee, then evolves towards intriguing spicy nuances and wild notes. On the palate, it is dry and full-bodied, supported by a dense texture and a deep tannic vein. This solid and balanced structure makes it ideal for pairing with rich dishes such as red meats, pork-based dishes, game and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This red originates from the Vinchio d’Asti area, in the heart of the prestigious Nizza zone. The vineyards are cultivated using the Guyot system at around 250 metres above sea level, benefiting from excellent southern exposure. The terroir is characterised by a sandy-limestone soil with a strong clay component, situated on steep slopes that require careful agricultural management. The old vines, grown according to organic farming principles, produce bunches of extraordinary concentration. The harvest is carried out by hand, carefully selecting the best fruit.

How it is produced

Vinification involves a fermentation and maceration phase of about fifteen days in steel containers, processes that are fundamental for extracting colour and substance. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, essential for harmonising the flavour profile. The wine then rests for a period of sixteen to eighteen months through maturation in oak barrels, divided between large barrels and smaller wooden casks. This skilful use of wood enhances the olfactory complexity and smooths the tannins. In spring, the final blend is created, concluding the process with bottling in the summer.

History and Curiosities

This Nizza DOCG embodies the passion of the Oddero family, whose winemaking roots date back to the 18th century. Produced on the steep sandy soils of Vinchio d’Asti, it is made from old Barbera vines over thirty years old, whose grapes are harvested strictly by hand. The expert craftsmanship culminates in a meticulous maturation in oak barrels for 16-18 months, which gives the wine a dense and enveloping texture. The combination of family history and artisanal care enhances the authentic Piedmontese winemaking tradition, offering a structured red wine with great character.

We have a country. We have a territory. We have, above all, deep roots that go back to the 18th century. We have a great piece of history to tell. It is the history of our family and of viniculture in the Langhe, of its wine cellars and vineyards. It is a story of the dedication of a people and a territory whose wines are represented by the masterpieces of Barolo and Barbaresco. It is a tale that we like to tell to all wine lovers who come to visit the place where our history came alive.

The history of today’s winery is inextricably tied to that of Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926 and grandson of the first Giacomo in the family (whom he was named after). Under Giacomo’s guidance, Poderi e Cantine Oddero took on its current productive configuration, extending vineyard property, increasing bottle production, and upholding a high quality that today is recognized worldwide.

The legacy of Giacomo Oddero is carried on today by his daughter Mariacristina, who entered the family business near the end of the 1990s, and grandchildren Isabella and Pietro, who represent the seventh generation of a family with over a century and a half of vinicultural tradition behind them.
