Description
What kind of wine it is
Gattinara Nervi Conterno is a still red wine made entirely from Nebbiolo grapes. It displays a bright, pale ruby hue and an olfactory bouquet of great elegance. The aromas range from medicinal herbs, such as mugwort, gentian and lemon balm, to notes of cherry, dried flowers and undergrowth. A hint of blood orange and traces of soot complete a deep sensory profile. On the palate, it is full, fresh and vibrantly lively. The polished and dense tannins support the structure towards a long, balsamic finish with hints of liquorice, revealing an intense aromatic complexity.
Where it comes from
The grapes for this Gattinara grow in Alto Piemonte, a region historically dedicated to viticulture. Nervi Conterno cultivates vineyards of absolute prestige such as Garavoglie, a sun-drenched hillside from dawn to dusk, Molsino, a natural amphitheatre facing south, and Valferana, a more sheltered area with an austere character. The uniqueness of the area lies in its acidic volcanic soils, rich in ancient porphyries and minerals such as manganese, iron and zinc. This particular composition, combined with the presence of clay and fine sands, gives the wine a distinct mineral imprint and a well-defined freshness, fundamental elements for its extraordinary balance.
How it is produced
The work in the cellar aims to enhance the purity of Nebbiolo through meticulous management. Vinification begins with fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, ideal for preserving the integrity of the varietal aromas. Afterwards, the wine matures for thirty-six months in oak barrels, a choice that encourages slow micro-oxygenation without overpowering the original scents of the grape. This careful barrel ageing allows the tannic texture to soften and the structure to harmonise, delivering a vibrant sip and remarkable ageing potential.
History and Curiosities
The Gattinara DOCG 2022 originates from the oldest winery in the area, founded in 1905 in the heart of the fascinating Alto Piemonte. The excellence of this label, awarded 93 points by Vinous and Wine Spectator, is the result of Roberto Conterno's vision and the prestige of unique vineyards such as the granite amphitheatre of Molsino and the refined Valferana. Ageing takes place in historic nineteenth-century underground cellars, where evocative brick vaults safeguard the wine, bestowing this pure Nebbiolo with extraordinary longevity and a distinctive character.

Founded in 1905 by Luigi Nervi, the winery has always been a benchmark for Nebbiolo production in Valsesia, also known as the greenest valley in Italy. The vineyards stretch across spectacular purple-hued slopes, due to the presence of quartz porphyry of volcanic origin, which gives the wines a distinct character compared to those from the Langhe or Roero regions.
One of the estate’s most iconic crus is Vigna Molsino, a natural amphitheater facing south, cradling the vines and allowing for slow, complete ripening. In this unique setting, the winery experienced a major turning point in 2018 with the arrival of Roberto Conterno—already renowned for his Barolo production at the Giacomo Conterno winery in Monforte d’Alba. With the acquisition of Nervi and its 27 hectares of vineyards, Conterno chose to invest in the potential of Nebbiolo from Upper Piedmont, helping to elevate the prestige of Gattinara DOCG on an international scale.
