Description
What type of wine it is
Michele Chiarlo's Nizza I Cipressi is an intense Piedmontese wine with a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status, made from Barbera grapes. The ruby red colour introduces an elegant bouquet, featuring notes of ripe cherry and raspberry, enriched by nuances of sweet tobacco. On the palate, it offers an ample and structured drinkability, capable of harmoniously balancing freshness and roundness. Vinified in steel and aged in large oak barrels, the sip concludes with a pleasantly sapid finish.
Where it comes from
This red wine originates from the Nizza area, within the renowned Tenuta La Court cru. The vineyards, trained using the Guyot system, enjoy optimal exposure between south-east and south-west, at an altitude of between 230 and 280 metres. The essence of the terroir lies in the Astian sands, composed of clay-limestone marls of marine sedimentary origin. The presence of silt and the abundance of microelements such as magnesium give the soil a unique potential. These characteristics are reflected in the quality of the grapes, giving the wine a fresh softness that faithfully expresses the character of the territory.
How it is produced
After a rigorous manual harvest, vinification begins with fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks to preserve the integrity of the aromatic profile. This is followed by maceration on the skins for ten to twelve days, managed with a shower system that ensures a balanced extraction. Once the malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine ages for twelve months in large oak barrels. The process is completed with a further rest until a total period of at least eighteen months is reached. This care in production defines an elegant structure, capable of showcasing the Barbera grape at its best.
History and curiosities
The Nizza DOCG I Cipressi by Michele Chiarlo originates from the La Court Estate, acquired in 1995 and conceived as the true symbol of the denomination. Its evocative label elevates the cypress tree to a mythical status, recalling the arduous harvests of the past and the difficult transport of baskets through the ruggedness of the wet terrain. This extraordinary 2023 vintage has enchanted international critics, winning the Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) from Gambero Rosso and achieving excellent scores from Wine Enthusiast.
