Description
What type of wine it is
Michele Chiarlo's Barolo Tortoniano is a red wine with a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin from Piedmont, made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. It is distinguished by a garnet colour with luminous and brilliant highlights. The aromatic profile is complex and captivating, defined by notes of rose petals, juniper berries and fine spices. On the palate, it offers a broad and well-structured sip, supported by a texture of silky tannins that provides harmony, elegance and a remarkable persistence.
Where it comes from
This wine is born in Piedmont from vineyards cultivated using the Guyot system. The roots dig deep into grey calcareous-tuffaceous marls of marine origin, dating back to the Tortonian era. The soil, characterised by a basic pH, features active limestone and a high concentration of mineral microelements such as magnesium and manganese. This geological matrix shapes the profound structural elegance and tactile finesse that distinguish Barolo.
How it is produced
Following careful summer thinning, the manual harvest is carried out. Vinification takes place in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for approximately fifteen to eighteen days, using a shower system to gently wet the cap. After malolactic fermentation, the ageing continues for at least three years in total, including a long maturation in medium and large-capacity wooden casks.
History and interesting facts
The roots of the Barolo Tortoniano 2022 go deep into geological history: the soils of grey calcareous-tuffaceous marls date back to the Tortonian era (approx. 9 million years ago) and are of marine sedimentary origin. An interesting aspect of the 2022 vintage is the remarkable resilience shown by the vines during the hot season, which led to the harvest being brought forward by about two weeks to preserve freshness and aromas. Confirming its prestige, the wine was awarded 92 points by critics James Suckling and Robert Parker.
