Description

What kind of wine it is

Azisa Zisola is an organic white wine produced by Mazzei in Sicily. The result of a harmonious blend of Grillo and Catarratto grapes, this still wine stands out for its sunny and distinctly Mediterranean character. The precise winemaking process enhances its citrusy aromatic profile, offering a fresh and lively sip that finishes with a pleasant and typical almond note on the finish.

Where it comes from

This wine is born in south-eastern Sicily, in the Noto area, within the renowned Zisola estate. The vineyards, cultivated using the traditional bush-trained system, grow on medium-textured limestone soils. The proximity to the coast ensures constant sea breezes that temper the summer heat, favouring the perfect ripening of the grapes and imparting a fine and dry mineral sensation on the palate.

How it is produced

Production begins with a rigorous staggered manual harvest, picking the Grillo first and then the Catarratto. Low-temperature fermentation preserves the primary aromas of the must, ensuring maximum fruit purity. After a brief rest exclusively in steel to maintain its original freshness, the glass releases intense bergamot aromas, orange blossom, lily and thyme, confirming a savoury tasting experience in perfect harmony with the olfactory sensations.

History and Curiosities

The name Azisa means “splendid” and evokes the radiant character of this organic white wine. Produced near Noto at the Zisola estate, founded in 2003, this wine embodies a captivating Mediterranean soul. This Sicilia DOC is crafted by the Mazzei family, who bring their oenological expertise and continue a centuries-old tradition spanning twenty-five generations, in a unique story that began back in 1435.

The estate is located in South-East Sicily, the land of origin of the Nero d'Avola vine only a few steps from Noto, famous for its baroque buildings and Unesco World Heritage Site. The Mazzei identified the latent potential of this land rich with history, culture, and charm, and started and ambitious winemaking project in 2003.

A property of 50 hectares, the area extends around the 3 buildings "bagli" of the estate, of which the main one enjoys a wonderful view over Noto and the surrounding "gardens" cultivated with vineyards, citrus trees, olives, and almonds. Here a small but efficient winery is provided with stainless steel vats with temperature control for winemaking and about 350 oak barrels for fining the wines.
