Description
What kind of wine it is
Philip di Mazzei is a red wine from the Tuscany denomination, an authentic expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. In the glass, it displays an intense and deep ruby red colour. On the nose, it reveals clear scents of blackcurrant and blueberry, accompanied by notes of vanilla sugar, cocoa, rose, and a refreshing mentholated touch. On the palate, it boasts a full and solid body, supported by polished tannins that lead to an intensely spicy finish.
Where it comes from
This wine is born from a blend of grapes from two different Tuscan wine-growing areas: Fonterutoli, inland, and Tenuta Belguardo, located along the coast. The vineyards, facing south and south-west, are situated at an altitude between fifty and three hundred and ten metres. The Alberese and Sandstone soils ensure optimal ripening of the bunches, providing mineral precision and a fine tannic texture. The wine's name is a tribute to Filippo Mazzei, a distinguished ancestor and eighteenth-century diplomat.
How it is produced
Following a careful manual harvest, the grapes ferment at a controlled temperature to extract colour and structure, preserving maximum aromatic purity. The wine matures for eighteen months in French and American oak barrels. This ageing process consolidates the tannic structure and harmonises the sweet spice notes, giving a deep, complex, and long-lived flavour profile.
History and Curiosities
Dedicated to the patriot Filippo Mazzei, a pioneer of viticulture in Virginia alongside Thomas Jefferson, this prestigious Cabernet Sauvignon celebrates the deep bond between Tuscany and the United States. The Mazzei family, active in the world of wine since 1435, skilfully blends centuries-old tradition with the architectural innovation of the Castello di Fonterutoli winery. This majestic red embodies the most authentic essence of the region, transforming a precious cultural heritage into a tasting experience of inestimable value and international standing.

At Fonterutoli, as well as at Belguardo and Zisola, resides the same philosophy that aims to promote local vine varieties as an expression of the identity of the region, in respect of diversity and nature, via sustainable agriculture and improvements mindfull of the delicate hydro-geologic balance, in order to prevent soil erosion and maximize water reserves in the region. All of this in order to be able to hand the land intact to future generations.
"I like to think to our family tree as a sturdy and generous vine plant because all Mazzei's history is constantly connected to vineyards, cellars and wine." (Marchese Lapo Mazzei, Cavaliere del Lavoro) Read more
