Description
What kind of wine it is
Marramiero Inferi is a still red wine that showcases pure Montepulciano. An authentic expression of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and the Terre dei Vestini, it reveals a deep and enveloping profile. In the glass, it releases aromas of ripe plum and black cherry, intertwined with notes of tobacco, vanilla and liquorice. The palate is powerful, supported by an imposing structure yet finely balanced by elegant tannins. The finish offers a long, spicy echo, making this red a perfect match for red meats and game or mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes for this red are grown in the vineyards of Marramiero, in Rosciano. The vines rest at three hundred metres above sea level on deep, rich soil with a clear clay matrix. The presence of iron and silt in the subsoil gives the fruit a pronounced savoury character. The area's climate, constantly tempered by the beneficial influence of the sea breeze, ensures a slow and steady ripening of the grapes. This unique terroir gives the Montepulciano a distinctive aromatic richness and a magnetic persistence on the palate, enhancing the true vocation of the Abruzzo land.
How it is produced
The process begins with fermentation using the Ganimede method and a long maceration on the skins to fully extract colour and body. After a brief period in stainless steel, the wine rests for eighteen months in small oak barrels, then matures for over a year in large Slavonian and French oak casks. This slow maturation in wood elegantly smooths the dense tannic structure. The cycle concludes with essential bottle ageing in the dark, thus consolidating a vigorous and harmonious profile capable of honouring long ageing times.
History and Curiosities
Produced at the Sant’Andrea Estate of Marramiero, the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Riserva Inferi boasts a fascinating history. Created in 1993, its name stands in contrast to that of the renowned Trebbiano Altare, outlining an evocative oenological dualism. This pure red wine stands out thanks to the innovative Ganimede fermentation and a rigorous ageing process of at least 36 months between steel, barrique, oak barrels and bottle. Multi-award-winning by international critics, it masterfully expresses the powerful and authentic vocation of the Abruzzo region.
