Description

What kind of wine it is

Marques de Vargas Rioja Reserva is a red wine created from a meticulous blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo grapes. True to the Rioja Reserva style, it offers a structured profile with great ageing potential. On the nose, it reveals intense aromas of mulberries, hints of violet, balsamic notes and an elegant menthol touch. On the palate, it displays an excellent concentration of fruit, perfectly integrated with polished tannins that provide a velvety, dense sip with a decidedly long finish.

Where it comes from

This Spanish red originates from the Rioja region, drawing fruit from the El Consul, La Misela and Terrazas vineyards. The plots showcase old vines over forty years of age, managed through an organic and sustainable approach. The excellent climatic conditions of the area, characterised by significant temperature variations before harvest and balanced rainfall, allow for optimal grape ripening, which is essential for developing the prized tannic structure that defines the palate.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with manual harvesting and continues with fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. The use of daily pump-overs and subsequent maceration on the skins ensure optimal aromatic extraction. After malolactic fermentation, partly conducted in wood, the wine matures for twenty-three months in new Russian oak barrels, supported by regular rackings. To preserve expressive authenticity, Marques de Vargas adopts a no filtration and no fining approach.

History and Curiosities

Marqués de Vargas Rioja Reserva 2020 is the magnificent result of old vines over forty years old, cultivated using organic methods in the renowned vineyards of El Consul, La Misela and Terrazas. Saying Marqués de Vargas in the wine world is naming four generations dedicated to the production and sales of excellent Rioja wines. The title of the Marqués de Vargas is held by a family closely linked to this important viticultural region in Spain.

It was in 1840 when Felipe de Mata, the eighth Marqués de Vargas, planted the first vines in the outskirts of Logroño.

Especially memorable was Hilario de la Mata, the father of the current Marqués de Vargas, who for years presided over one of the most emblematic wineries in Rioja.

In 1989, Pelayo de la Mata, the current Marqués de Vargas, realized his father’s dream by building a winery on the Estate Hacienda Pradolagar in Logroño.
