Description
What kind of wine it is
The Barolo Riserva Brunate by Marengo is a red wine from Piedmont that fully expresses the character of Nebbiolo. In the glass, it displays a clear and transparent garnet colour, hinting at a multifaceted aromatic profile. On the nose, raspberry, redcurrant and blood orange stand out, skilfully intertwined with notes of sweet tobacco, eucalyptus, star anise, liquorice root and subtle hints of vanilla and incense. On the palate, it offers a warm and moderately smooth sip, supported by a dense tannic structure and a pleasant citrus freshness. Designed for long ageing, it pairs perfectly with pork dishes, game and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This Barolo Riserva originates in Piedmont, within the renowned Brunate geographical designation, an area famous for its strong winemaking tradition. The producer Marengo is a family-run business rooted in Castagnole Monferrato since 1835, focused on excellent viticulture. The estate cultivates a modest area of about eight hectares of vineyards, ensuring meticulous attention at every stage of agriculture. The hillside locations of the vineyards provide ideal exposure for grape ripening, a crucial factor in the agronomic approach to obtaining the best raw material.
How it is produced
The production process benefits from the expertise of oenologist Giuseppe Caviola, with a technical approach aimed at achieving the Riserva classification. The vinification process enhances the natural complexity of the grapes, while slow maturation harmonises the intensity of the tannic structure with the vibrancy of the palate. To allow the bouquet to open and to appreciate every nuance, a decanting of at least one hour is recommended. Tasted at a temperature between 18 and 20°C, the wine gradually reveals its expressive finesse, confirming a rigorous, elegant and highly persistent profile on the palate.
History and Curiosities
The roots of the Marengo family date back to 1835 in Castagnole Monferrato. Officially founded in 1899, the winery has been dedicated to outstanding viticulture since the 1960s, and today cultivates eight hectares of vineyards. Thanks to the prestigious expertise of oenologist Giuseppe Caviola, the company combines its historical heritage with a continuous pursuit of quality improvement. This evolution culminates in the Barolo DOCG Riserva, a Nebbiolo of great prestige which, with the 2020 vintage, has won over international critics by achieving an impressive 96 points from James Suckling.
