Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo del Comune di Barolo by Marchesi di Barolo is a rich red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and elegant, supported by soft tannins that lead to a persistent finish with delicate spicy notes. The bouquet reveals intense aromas of ripe red fruits, dried rose and balsamic hints, making it ideal to pair with braised meats and game.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from estate-owned vineyards located on the well-exposed hills of the Barolo municipality, divided among prestigious crus such as Cannubi, Sarmassa and Ravera. The soils, known as the Marl of Sant’Agata, consist of a compact mix of clay, limestone, sand and silt. This composition, combined with a wealth of mineral salts, gives the wine a savoury and spicy texture, defining a profile of clear rigour and finesse.

How it is produced

The best bunches are hand-picked and vinified separately for each cru. After destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with a fifteen-day maceration on the skins and regular pumping over. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wines are blended and aged for two years. Maturation in French and Slavonian oak barrels of various sizes imparts a measured depth to the wine.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1806, the Marchesi di Barolo winery produces this majestic Barolo DOCG 2020 from grapes hand-picked in prestigious estate-owned vineyards. Each vineyard is vinified separately to enhance its identity, achieving perfect harmony in the subsequent blending. The two-year ageing in Slavonian oak barrels imparts exceptional elegance to this red, which has been awarded an excellent score of 93/100. An authentic Piedmontese excellence that guarantees extraordinary longevity, capable of evolving magnificently for up to fifteen years.

The Marchesi di Barolo winery was founded in 1806 in the heart of the Langhe, following the marriage between Carlo Tancredi Falletti and the French aristocrat Juliette Colbert di Maulévrier, who understood the importance of nebbiolo grapes, the production of which gave rise to intense, decisive wines that would improve with time. Xtrawine devotes special attention to Marchesi di Barolo wines, proposing bottles that have received important awards from Bibenda and belonging to the best vintages of 2012, 2013 and 2016. At the end of the 19th century, the Marchesi di Barolo winery was acquired by Pietro Abbona, and is now run by his nephew Ernesto Abbona, who can count on a vineyard estate of 65 hectares from which come high-quality wines that add to the winery's fame. Thanks to the climatic conditions and the fertility of the land, aromatic, pure and simple grapes are cultivated, which are processed in the cellar to the best of their ability thanks to proven experience in the field.
