Description

What kind of wine it is

Engelgarten is an organic white wine produced by Marcel Deiss in Alsace. This blend skilfully combines Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Beurot, Moscato and Pinot Noir. The glass, with its straw yellow colour and greenish highlights, reveals clear fruity and floral notes that introduce a dry and distinctly mineral palate, with a vertical progression and a mouth-watering dynamic. The rough, stony texture gives depth and an enveloping energy, finishing with a sharp finale and a noble bitter note.

Where it comes from

This white originates in Bergheim, from a vineyard historically known as the “garden of angels”. The terroir is characterised by gravelly soils over a white subsoil and a marked water deficit. These conditions, combined with old, low-vigour vines, encourage low yields and concentrated grapes, giving the wine its typical stony character.

How it is produced

Production follows the principles of organic viticulture, with strict management including short pruning, ploughing and composting. The primary aim of these practices is to limit yields, which is essential to faithfully express the character of the land. Vinification is designed to preserve the solid structure and vertical tension of the palate. Thanks to this meticulous care, the wine develops an excellent ageing potential, able to rest in the cellar for around ten years.

History and Curiosities

“The Garden of Angels”, known as Engelgarten, is a Grand Vin by Marcel Deiss, a winemaker who has been producing high-quality wines for generations. The wine originates from one of the most renowned terroirs of Bergheim. The artistic label depicts an angelic figure with wings and a musical instrument, while among the grape varieties, Pinot Beurot stands out, a fascinating historical denomination.

Domaine Marcel DEISS is located in Bergheim, a small village nestling in the heart of the wine region of Alsace, equidistant from the northern and southern boundaries of the region. Current winemaker Jean-Michel DEISS was born into a long-established family of wine growers, living at BERGHEIM since 1744.

Managed today by Jean-Michel DEISS, the domaine consists of 26 hectares (52 acres) of hillside vineyards spread over 9 communes and approximately 20 kilometers.

The extreme variation in conditions of production at the domaine have led Jean-Michel DEISS to seek to express in each wine the three factors that make a wine complete : the grape variety, the vintage and the terroir.

The greater the wine, the more the gustatory characteristics linked to the soil take the place of the typicity linked to grape variety or vintage.

When speaking of terroir, the following have to be taken into consideration : geology, pedology, climate and microclimate, technical exploitation of the character of the soil, microfauna and flor, and the traditional methods and techniques used to produce wines.

This Alsatian wine, with its dry and mineral character, elegantly enhances the flavours of the sea. Pair its warm and mineral profile with shellfish and baked fish for a memorable taste harmony. Its complex texture also pairs ideally with savoury quiches and cow's milk cheeses, best enjoyed at a temperature of 10°C.
