Description
What kind of wine it is
Maculan Torcolato is a sweet white dessert wine made from dried grapes, showcasing the Vespaiola grape from the Maculan winery, a benchmark for the Breganze area and Torcolato style. The meticulous drying process concentrates aromas and sugars, creating a full and silky profile. On the palate, it displays a masterful balance between sweetness and pronounced freshness. Perfect as a meditation wine or paired with blue cheeses, it finishes with a long, layered and exceptionally clean aftertaste.
Where it comes from
This dessert wine originates in the Veneto region of Breganze, an area with a clear winemaking vocation. The landscape is characterised by hills of volcanic origin, gravelly plains and tuffaceous rock, elements that impart a well-defined mineral character to the wine. In this environment, Vespaiola develops optimal characteristics, reaching perfect ripeness. The geology of the soil ensures a high aromatic intensity and a solid acidic backbone, essential for balancing the natural concentration of the fruit.
How it is produced
The process involves a slow drying of the best grape bunches until January, a crucial step to enhance aromatic complexity. After vinification, the wine matures for twelve months in French oak barrels, one third of which are new, and completes its ageing with six months in bottle. In the glass, it shines with an intense golden yellow, releasing aromas of honey, vanilla, dried apricot and white truffle. The sip is dense and enveloping, enlivened by vivid notes of lime and papaya, leading to a long finish of salted caramel.
History and Curiosities
Torcolato Maculan originates in Breganze as a genuine expression of Venetian family tradition. This elegant dessert wine for contemplation is made from Vespaiola grapes, a variety so sweet that it naturally attracts wasps. The finest bunches undergo meticulous drying until January, then mature for twelve months in French oak barriques and are refined in the bottle. This artisanal ritual bestows a complex aromatic profile with enveloping notes of honey and vanilla, masterfully balancing sweetness and acidity in every sip.

It was grandfather Giovanni who founded the actual winery, in 1947. Between the ‘50s and ‘60s he specialized in producing substantial quantities of white and red wines, which he distributed in large-sized bottles to osterie, trattorias and grocers’ shops, the so-called "casoini".
The revolution – from a quality point of view – was the work of Fausto. In 1973, after finishing his studies in Conegliano, he returned to the company and took over the reins of the business. In spite of some initial difficulties, his tenaciousness, thirst for knowledge and desire to experiment in both the vineyards and winery led the young oenologist to become one of the major innovators in Italian wine.
Today, Maria Vittoria and Angela share the running of the estate with their father Fausto. Thanks to their professionalism and enterprise, they represent the future of the Maculan company, focusing on technological innovation, sustainability and internationalization. Read more
