Description
What kind of wine is it
Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva by López de Heredia is an authentic still red wine. The result of a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Carignan, it displays a vibrant colour enriched by elegant amber highlights. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet, where notes of vanilla, dried forest fruits, leather and earthy hints stand out. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, dry and velvety, supported by lively citrus acidity. There is a prominent juicy fruit of redcurrant and raspberry, with vigorous, well-integrated tannins. The long, dynamic finish delivers intense notes of cherry, violet and chocolate, completed by a refined hint of mandarin.
Where does it come from
This wine originates in Spain, in the heart of the renowned Rioja Alta region. The Viña Tondonia vineyards rest on limestone soil which imparts great precision and tension to the glass. The López de Heredia winery, a historic family-run estate, adopts a rigorous and attentive approach to viticulture. The microclimate provides exceptional ageing potential exceeding a decade, while maintaining freshness and complexity.
How is it produced
Fermentation takes place in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine undergoes a long ageing period, maturing for at least six years in American oak barrels. This gradual evolution encourages the development of complex tertiary aromas and shapes a dense, harmonious tannic structure. It is recommended to decant the wine for two hours and serve at 18-20°C. Thanks to its structure, this Rioja pairs ideally with red meat dishes, lamb, flavourful pork preparations and mature cheeses.
History and Curiosities
The Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva embodies the prestigious heritage of the López de Heredia winery, founded in 1877. Born from Don Rafael's intuition during the phylloxera period, this outstanding red is still produced today following unchanged traditional methods. The 2013 vintage, awarded 97 points by Decanter, ferments with indigenous yeasts and matures through a noble six-year ageing in ancient American oak barrels. The result is a complex and vibrant masterpiece, renowned for its refined vanilla aromas and extraordinary ageing potential.

Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.
For over a century our emotions have been rooted in our love and passion for this land and its harvest. We cherish our heritage, and this combination of love and the rigorous quality standards we apply, have become our trademarks and remain our maxim for today and the future.
