Description

What kind of wine it is

The Avni Chardonnay by Lingua Franca is an organic white wine from the Willamette Valley that precisely expresses the character of Chardonnay. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts defines its vibrant and elegant style. On the nose, it reveals an aromatic bouquet where white flowers, green apple, citrus fruits and mineral notes of wet stone intertwine. On the palate, it displays a medium-full body and a rounded texture, supported by a natural freshness that carries the sip towards a clean and persistent finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, through a selection of prized plots among Eola-Amity Hills, Yamhill-Carlton and the Chehalem Mountains. The territorial imprint of this complex region is strongly linked to its shallow volcanic soils, which alternate with particular areas characterised by ancient marine sediments, as in the Van Duzer Corridor. This geological combination gives the wine a pronounced minerality and a clear aromatic definition, while also ensuring a natural structural freshness.

How it is produced

The process begins with a gentle whole cluster pressing, followed by settling of the must. Alcoholic fermentation starts spontaneously in barrels, thanks to the exclusive action of indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation also occurs naturally in wood, softening the wine's profile. Ageing sur lie continues for eleven months using a combination of new and neutral barrels. Afterwards, the wine is transferred to closed tanks, where it rests for a further six months in contact with the fine lees before bottling.

History and Curiosities

The Lingua Franca Avni Chardonnay 2022 is an elegant expression of the Willamette Valley, the result of careful organic and sustainable farming in Oregon. Its complex minerality stems from the prized volcanic soils and marine sediments that characterise the region's vineyards. The meticulous winemaking process includes gentle whole-cluster pressing and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in barrel. Ageing for eleven months in wood and six months in tank on fine lees gives the wine a rounded and vibrant texture, earning it excellent reviews from critics.

From this winery
Lingua Franca represents a fine tradition of bringing people of different backgrounds to common ground, sharing conversation and enjoyment. Inspired by an extraordinary vineyard site in the Eola-Amity Hills of the Willamette Valley and following low-impact, organic, and biodynamic farming principles, we planted our estate vineyard with different combinations of rootstock and budwood to best reflect the varying soil conditions, resulting in fruit of unparalleled purity and elegance. Widely respected as one of the top winemakers in Burgundy, Dominique Lafon took notice of this exceptional vineyard site and joined Larry Stone, alongside winemaking protégé Thomas Savre, to craft uniquely expressive wines harnessing the unique terroir of Oregon.
