Description
What kind of wine it is
Les Crêtes Fumin is a still red wine that authentically expresses the territory of the Aosta Valley. Made from Fumin grapes, it displays an intense ruby colour with violet highlights. The full and structured profile offers a juicy and fragrant palate, supported by soft tannins. On the nose, it reveals a clear fruity bouquet combined with hints of leather, vanilla, juniper and tobacco. This alpine wine culminates in a long and persistent finish with notes of liquorice, making it the ideal choice to accompany braised meats, game and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This red originates from the Aymavilles area, within the La Tour and Les Crêtes vineyards in the Aosta Valley. The vines take root in sandy moraine soils on steep slopes, at around six hundred and fifty metres altitude with a breezy north-west exposure. The influence of the alpine climate ensures slow ripening, resulting in clear and precise aromatic profiles. Every practice in the vineyard reflects the principles of heroic viticulture, which requires rigorous manual work on the mountain slopes to give the fruit marked concentration and a solid structure.
How it is produced
Everything begins in October with a careful manual harvest. The grapes, once chilled and destemmed, ferment in steel tanks where targeted daily pump-overs ensure optimal aromatic extraction. The wine rests for twelve months in French oak barrels, then further matures in the bottle. This rigorous process shapes a caressing tannic texture, perfectly integrating the spicy nuances with the original fruit and giving the palate a persistent gustatory balance.
History and Curiosities
An outstanding example of heroic viticulture, this captivating Alpine red wine embodies the centuries-old dedication of the Charrère family. The name Fumin refers to the characteristic smoke-grey coloured grapes, which were historically used in blends and saved from extinction by the tenacity of local winegrowers. In 1993, Les Crêtes made history by becoming the first winery to vinify this grape as a single varietal in the prestigious Valle d’Aosta DOC. The 2023 vintage, born on the slopes of Aymavilles, offers a glass of absolute elegance, ideal for long and noble ageing.
