Description
What kind of wine it is
Le Piane Boca is a still red wine that harmonises the elegance of Nebbiolo and the spicy character of Vespolina. On the nose, it reveals a deep aromatic profile, with clear notes of blackberry and blackcurrant and a fine final touch of liquorice. This blend expresses a balanced and taut structure, fully supported by vibrant freshness and a remarkable mineral drive. To fully appreciate its evolution and aromatic nuances, a one-hour decanting is recommended before tasting.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the hillside slopes of Boca, in the Novara area. The vineyards of Le Piane are located at around four hundred metres above sea level, cultivated using the simple Guyot system. The expressive identity of the sip is forged by the volcanic soils, composed of porphyritic gravel with a low pH. This substrate, combined with historic fifty-year-old Nebbiolo vines and very low yields, imparts a distinct mineral imprint to the glass.
How it is produced
In the winery, a strict organic approach is followed, starting fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open wooden and steel vats. The thirty-day maceration is marked by daily manual punch-downs, ideal for extracting the fine tannic texture in a harmonious way. This is followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation, a prelude to a measured ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels for three or four years. The final resting period consolidates the structure, ensuring the wine has a remarkable ageing potential.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1998 by restoring the vineyards of Antonio Cerri, Le Piane preserves rare, over fifty-year-old Spanna vines. The Boca 2020 from Le Piane blends the nobility of Nebbiolo with the spicy essence of Vespolina, creating a wine with profound minerality. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 3-4 years in Slavonian oak barrels, this Piedmontese red offers seductive notes of blackcurrant and liquorice. Celebrated by Vinous, this Boca DOC combines elegance and longevity in an unforgettable sip, a proud expression of its volcanic terroir.

In the nineties, the vinologist Alexander Trolf and the vintner Christoph Künzli showed enthusiasm for the forgotten wine region of Boca and its great wines. They were convinced that this would be the right place for a high-class wine property. At that time they became acquainted to Antonio Cerri, one of the last wine- growers to produce the typical and outstanding Boca wine. His vineyard »Campo delle Piane«, with an area of 0.6 hectares, was situated above the village and meanwhile had been surrounded by a forest. Cerri produced approx. 2'500 litres of wine every year, until 1991. The site is planted with Spanna grapes, aged more than 50 years.
In view of his advanced age of more than 80 years, Antonio Cerri decided to retire, and he offered to sell his vineyard to Alexander Trolf and Christoph Künzli. They took their chance and step-by-step they acquired further small plots. Like a puzzle the property grew together and became the new wine property »Le Piane« with a vineyard area of 6.5 hectares with a possibility for extensions.
The purchased grounds were cleared and newly terraced, in cooperation with the authorities of the nearby natural reserve of Monte Fenera. The restored vineyard areas were planted with Nebbiolo vines and other vines specific to the region.
Unfortunately Alexander Trolf did not live to see this successful development of the vineyard as he died in a tragic road accident His ideas and dreams however will remain in the vineyard »Meridiana« which he replanted. The prominent yellow house therein has become the society's logo and thus symbolizes the new beginning. Read more
