Description
What kind of wine it is
The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo produced by La Valentina is a still red wine that sincerely and directly expresses the characteristics of the Montepulciano grape. Its rich aromatic profile is distinguished by intense aromas of black cherry and strawberry jam, enriched with hints of aromatic herbs, tea leaves and delicate spicy nuances. On the palate, it is enveloping and medium to full-bodied, supported by a smooth and compact tannin that gives the wine balance and a pleasant freshness. The finish is characterised by a slightly savoury ending, enhanced by persistent menthol notes that provide a long and lingering aftertaste.
Where it comes from
This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo originates from selected vineyards in the municipalities of Spoltore, San Valentino and Scafa, in the province of Pescara. La Valentina’s vineyards are situated at an altitude between one hundred and fifty and four hundred metres above sea level. The optimal south and south-west exposure ensures excellent sunlight, promoting a slow and regular ripening of the grapes. The vines grow on medium-textured soils, characterised by a strong clay-limestone component. These pedoclimatic conditions give the wine remarkable structure, deep colour intensity and that distinctive savoury drive that balances the sip, offering a faithful expression of the hilly terroir.
How it is produced
The processing of the grapes begins with a rigorous manual selection, followed by destemming and crushing. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel vats at a controlled temperature, with a maceration on the skins of about ten days to extract colour and aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the maturation phase begins. The eighteen-month ageing takes place mainly in steel, with the use of concrete tanks and a measured passage in oak barrels and second and third passage barriques. This careful use of containers preserves the fragrance of the fruit, ensuring a harmonious evolution before bottling.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1990 through the dedication of the Di Properzio family, La Valentina tends forty hectares of pergola-trained vines between 150 and 400 metres above sea level in Spoltore, San Valentino and Scafa, practising minimal intervention in the vineyard. Supported by oenologist Luca D’Attoma, the estate begins bottling fifteen months after the harvest. This wine has been awarded 92 points by James Suckling, 4 bunches by Bibenda and 2 red glasses by Gambero Rosso.

Our wines are the natural products of our own terroir – our unique combination of terrain and soil – which we try to convey to every bottle and which is the secret of our original taste. The local micro-climate and the land itself, to which our vines are bound and so well-adapted, give us wines of unique and distinctive character. We are convinced that a fine wine is born from the sum of countless tiny details, so our objective must not only be to consistently produce fine wines, but also to make sure that they are and will always remain authentic.
