Description

What kind of wine it is

Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage is a red wine that expresses the authentic character of Pinotage. Its aromatic profile opens with clear notes of red fruits, plum and blackberry, enriched by sweet spices and delicate earthy nuances. On the palate, it reveals a medium body, supported by refreshing acidity. Flavours of raspberry and liquorice blend with hints of milk chocolate, wrapped in finely structured tannins. The smooth finish makes it ideal to pair with pasta dishes with ragù, grilled meats and spicy Asian cuisine recipes.

Where it comes from

This red originates from the renowned wine-growing area of Stellenbosch, on clay soils that give the wine a solid structure. The Kanonkop estate, led by the fourth generation of the family, has been bottling its own grapes since 1973. The brand's name comes from a local hill where, in the seventeenth century, a cannon shot was fired to alert farmers to the arrival of trading ships in Table Bay. This historical legacy translates into a deep and mature understanding of the South African terroir.

How it is produced

The process begins with fermentation in open-top concrete tanks. During this stage, punch-downs are carried out every two hours for targeted extraction, separating the must from the skins after three days. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine rests for twelve months in second and third-fill French oak barrels. This carefully calibrated ageing integrates delicate spicy notes without overpowering the fruit, ensuring stability and supporting an estimated longevity of between five and ten years.

History and Curiosities

The Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage embodies the prestigious South African winemaking tradition, originating from a historic estate in Stellenbosch. Now managed by the fourth generation and active since 1973, the winery owes its name to the hill where, in the past, a cannon signalled the arrival of ships in Table Bay. This fascinating heritage is reflected in a pure Pinotage skilfully matured in French oak barrels: a medium-bodied wine that combines elegant structural complexity with a memorable taste.
