Description

What kind of wine it is

Jordan Nine Yards Chardonnay is a still white wine from South Africa produced by Jordan. Made from Chardonnay grapes, it stands out for its layered aromatic profile, blending notes of butter, ripe peach and fresh citrus with delicate spicy hints. On the palate, the Chardonnay reveals its full breadth, offering a rich and creamy texture supported by pronounced minerality. The persistent finish, with elegant toasted nuances, pairs perfectly with shellfish, black rice dishes and firm-fleshed fish baked in a salt crust, as well as cheese selections.

Where it comes from

This white originates from the slopes of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, an outstanding wine region influenced by constant ocean breezes. The vineyards benefit from a cool Mediterranean climate, with an eastern exposure at an altitude between 250 and 280 metres. Morning mists help to moderate temperatures during ripening, preserving the grapes' natural acidity. The vines are rooted in decomposed granite soils, a geological matrix that imparts pronounced savouriness and refined elegance to the wine.

How it is produced

The grapes are destemmed and pressed before beginning alcoholic fermentation in French oak barrels, some of which are new. The process combines selected yeasts and spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts, ensuring precise aromatic definition. The wine then matures for ten months on its fine lees, a crucial step for enhancing structural roundness and aromatic integration. The result is a complex and persistent wine, characterised by fine, vibrant freshness.

History and Curiosities

The Nine Yards Chardonnay 2022 represents the pinnacle of the family-run Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, where world-class excellence has been produced since 1993. This label, awarded 92 points by Robert Parker, originates from the finest plots situated on east-facing granite soils. The meticulous production process includes mixed fermentation and ageing on fine lees for ten months in exquisite French oak barrels. The result is a creamy, elegant wine with superb minerality, winner of the gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

The rich and creamy texture of this Chardonnay is enhanced by crustaceans and firm-fleshed fish, such as those baked in a salt crust. Its fresh minerality perfectly balances black rice dishes, offering an enveloping sip. Served at the ideal temperature of 10 °C, it magnificently concludes the meal alongside a careful selection of cheeses.
