Description
What kind of wine it is
Jean Foillard's Morgon is a still red wine from France made from Gamay grapes. To the eye, it displays a ruby red colour with violet highlights, hinting at a bouquet of red fruits and intense mineral notes. On the palate, it reveals a solid structure, perfectly balanced with pronounced elegance and persistence. Excellent when paired with red meats, poultry, cured meats and mature cheeses, it shows its full expressiveness if decanted for about an hour and served at a temperature between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in France, in the heart of Beaujolais, within the renowned Morgon area. The vineyards are situated on the Côte du Py, characterised by granite and schist soils resting on an alluvial cone, elements which impart a profound mineral character to its sensory profile. Since 1980, Jean Foillard has managed the estate following a natural approach inspired by Jules Chauvet, cultivating the land with the utmost respect for the local ecosystem.
How it is produced
Production is based on grapes from old vines, grown without the use of herbicides or synthetic pesticides. A strict late harvest ensures the highest quality of raw material. In the cellar, the process aims to preserve the integrity of the fruit, avoiding chaptalisation and completing the process with no filtration whatsoever. Thanks to its solid and well-defined structure, this wine boasts excellent ageing potential, capable of evolving positively for a period of between ten and fifteen years.
History and Curiosities
Since 1980, the year he took over his estate in Beaujolais, Jean Foillard has embodied the soul of the most authentic Morgon. Following the natural philosophy of Jules Chauvet, this renowned French wine comes to life from select pure Gamay grapes, grown on soils rich in granite and schist. The 2023 vintage is born from old vines through rigorous selection and artisanal craftsmanship: no filtration, no added sugar, and minimal sulphites. This award-winning excellence, rated 92/100 by Vinous, offers an elegant structure and exceptional persistence.
