Description

What kind of wine it is

Fleurie by Jean Foillard is a still red wine with a French controlled designation that expresses the authenticity of Gamay. To the eye, it displays a pale ruby colour, which anticipates clear aromas of red fruits, violet and thyme. On the palate, it is fresh, smooth and persistent, supported by a rustic structure, spicy notes and a marked minerality that defines its identity, enhanced by artisanal vinification without filtration.

Where it comes from

This red originates in Beaujolais, within the renowned Fleurie area. Jean Foillard cultivates old vines with a respectful approach, excluding the use of herbicides and synthetic pesticides. This method allows the soil to impart its unique characteristics to the fruit, ensuring an authentic territorial expression. The result is a wine capable of evolving magnificently over time, demonstrating an ageing potential that can reach up to fifteen years.

How it is produced

The production follows a philosophy of minimal intervention. The process begins with a late harvest and a rigorous selection of the healthiest bunches. To preserve the integrity of the must, there is no chaptalisation and no filtration. After a one-hour decanting, it pairs excellently with white and red meats, pork, lamb, as well as rich platters of cured meats and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1981, the Jean Foillard winery celebrates Beaujolais by following the philosophy of Jules Chauvet. This Fleurie AOC is produced from old vines cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides. Thanks to a late harvest and rigorous selection, vinification takes place without filtration or chaptalisation, with minimal use of sulphites to preserve the integrity of the fruit. This artisanal method delivers an authentic expression of the terroir, free from standardised aromas and awarded 93 points by the Vinous guide for the splendid 2023 vintage.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1981
Jean and Agnès Foillard took over his father’s domaine in 1980. Most of their vineyards are planted on the Côte du Py, the famed slope outside the town of Villié-Morgon and the pride of Morgon. These granite and schist soils sit on an alluvial fan at the highest point above the town and impart great complexity. However, great real estate is not the only key to Foillard’s success. Early on, Jean began to follow the teachings of Jules Chauvet, a traditionalist who defied everything that the more commercial brands were touting in the region. Jean and three other local vignerons, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton, soon joined in on the movement. They return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration. The end result allows Morgon to express itself naturally, as it should be without the bubblegum and banana aromas of so many other Beaujolais available today. Its rustic structure, spicy notes, and mineral-laden backbone are what real Morgon is all about. Read more
