Description
What kind of wine it is
Barthenau Vigna Herbsthofl Pinot Nero by J. Hofstätter is a South Tyrolean red of great stature, produced from old vines around sixty-five years old. This Pinot Nero offers a deep aromatic profile, with clear notes of morello cherry and raspberry. On the palate, it expresses an enveloping harmony, supported by elegant acidity and perfectly integrated sweet tannins.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the renowned Mazon plateau, located in the northernmost part of the estate, at an altitude between 430 and 460 metres. The glacial-origin soils, characterised by a calcareous-sandy composition, impart a pronounced aromatic precision to the wine. The vines, trained using the pergola system, derive from a historic selection that enhances the distinct varietal profile of the grape and broadens its gustatory complexity.
How it is produced
Vinification involves fermentation in concrete, followed by a long maturation of two years in barrels of various sizes. This meticulous ageing gives the wine a deep ruby colour and reveals aromas enriched by a measured hint of vanilla and sweet spices. The final rest in the bottle refines its overall harmony, bringing a marked concentration of flavours and absolute elegance to the glass.
History and Curiosities
Vinified separately with the 2022 vintage, Barthenau Vigna Herbsthöfl represents a milestone of the Mazon plateau. Its grapes take root in glacial-origin soils, situated between 430 and 460 metres above sea level, and come from a precious selection of the historic Vigna Roccolo from 1942. This illustrious heritage, signed by the Hofstätter winery, offers a South Tyrolean Pinot Noir of exceptional finesse: a masterpiece that enhances the power of the old vines, magnificently crowned by the prestigious score of 96 points from James Suckling.
