Description

What kind of wine it is

Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is a still red wine made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. A true expression of the Montalcino region, it stands out for its structured style, characterised by velvety tannins and a balanced freshness. The submerged cap fermentation with indigenous yeasts encourages a harmonious extraction of organoleptic components. Its persistent finish, with typical ferrous notes, makes it the ideal pairing to enhance mature cheeses, game, and red meats.

Where it comes from

This wine originates on the western slopes of the Montalcino hills, within an estate surrounded by unspoilt woodland. The grapes come from old vines over fifty years old, situated at altitudes between 150 and 450 metres. Poggione employs sustainable farming practices, benefiting from a microclimate ideal for proper ripening. These natural conditions define an intense aromatic profile, enriched with nuances of cherry, liquorice, dark tobacco, and smoky hints.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a rigorous manual selection of the bunches. The must ferments at a controlled temperature in steel vats, subsequently completing malolactic fermentation. The wine's structure is shaped through a maturation of around thirty months in large French oak casks, stored in underground cellars. Further ageing before release ensures its remarkable capacity for long ageing, revealing a ruby red colour with elegant garnet highlights.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1890 by the Franceschi family, the renowned estate Il Poggione is a historic benchmark in the production of the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino. This elegant wine is crafted from Sangiovese grapes sustainably grown in old vineyards over fifty years old, sheltered by unspoilt woodlands. Under the expert guidance of oenologist Fabrizio Bindocci, the winery combines innovation and tradition, maturing the wines five metres underground in fine French oak to enhance their longevity and structure.

Generation after generation, many resources were spent on research for quality, clonal selections, winemaking and aging techniques, and also by building a modern winery for the standards at that time. Il Poggione was one of the first wineries to market the Brunello di Montalcino wine as early as the 1900’s, and one of the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.

After more than a Century, Lavinio Franceschi’s work is still a fundamental point of reference for his successors, Leopoldo and Livia, who continue to develop the business with that same dedication and unrelenting passion, combining the ancient skills of winemaking crafts and tradition with the latest, most innovative techniques.
