Description
What kind of wine it is
Luigi Guarini Primitivo di Manduria is a still red wine produced in Apulia by Losito & Guarini. Made from Primitivo grapes, it displays an intense ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The bouquet combines notes of black cherry and plum with spicy hints of black pepper, enriched by touches of cocoa and walnut. On the palate, it reveals a well-balanced structure and noble tannins, offering a smooth texture and a harmonious, deep sip. This enveloping red is an excellent pairing for rich first courses, succulent roasts, game, and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This Primitivo di Manduria originates from the historic wine-growing areas of the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto. The region benefits from a warm and dry climate, essential for ensuring the full ripening of the grapes and imparting the typical fleshy fruit character. The vines are cultivated using the traditional alberello training system, ideal for adapting the plants to local climatic conditions. The roots delve into soils composed of clay and calcareous marl, characterised by the presence of iron-rich red earth. This particular soil composition supports the wine's complexity and personality.
How it is produced
The grape processing begins with a manual harvest, aimed at preserving the integrity of the fruit. After crushing and destemming, the must undergoes a long maceration on the skins, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation to ensure targeted extraction of colour and tannic structure. The wine is initially matured for at least six months in large oak barrels, acquiring smoothness and spicy complexity. Subsequently, ageing continues in stainless steel tanks for a period ranging from six to eight months, supported by gentle micro-oxygenation that refines its gustatory and olfactory balance.
History and Curiosities
Since 1910, the Losito & Guarini Winery has celebrated Apulian excellence with the Luigi Guarini Primitivo di Manduria DOC. This prestigious red from the 2023 vintage is born in an exceptional terroir, where bush-trained vines sink their roots into iron-rich red soil and clay, reaching down into the limestone subsoil in search of freshness. Shaped by the sun and wind, the wine boasts a complex structure that has been internationally recognised: 94 points from Luca Maroni and a gold medal at the Berliner Wein Trophy certify its outstanding quality.
